Head Trauma Not Associated With Long Term Effects On Autonomic Function, Carley A. Shannon, Kimberli L. Pike, Sydney R. Dejonge, Paul R. Nagelkirk, Andrew T. Del Pozzi

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 14(3): 779-790, 2021. Contact-sports can elicit concussions, which impacts autonomic function, as well as elicit repetitive head trauma, where autonomic function has not yet been assessed. The purpose of this study was to determine if differences in autonomic function exist among three groups (CTRL: healthy non-contact-sport participant, RHT: repetitive head trauma contact-sport participant, CONC: previous concussion). Forty participants (16 men and 24 women), aged 18-37 (22 ± 3), participated in the study. Participants were grouped based on their sport and concussion history (CTRL, RHT, and CONC). Body composition was measured via air displacement plethysmography. Prior …

Evaluating The Intra-Rater And Inter-Rater Reliability Of Fixed Tension Scale Instrumentation For Determining Isometric Neck Strength, Alexander T. Mcdaniel, Lindsey Schroeder, Jessica Freedman, Yishi Wang, Michel J.H. Heijnen Apr 2021

Evaluating The Intra-Rater And Inter-Rater Reliability Of Fixed Tension Scale Instrumentation For Determining Isometric Neck Strength, Alexander T. Mcdaniel, Lindsey Schroeder, Jessica Freedman, Yishi Wang, Michel J.H. Heijnen

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 14(3): 563-577, 2021. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability of a fixed tension scale instrumentation, comparing the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability between seating and standing measurement techniques. Instrumentation developed from this study will be utilized to assess isometric neck strength in future studies comparing neck strengthening protocols. METHODS: Isometric neck strength for eight movements (cervical/capital flexion, cervical/capital extension, left/right lateral flexion, left/right cervical rotation) as well as anthropometric measurements were evaluated for thirty-one participants through the use of a novel neck strength assessment protocol. RESULTS: The fixed tension scale instrumentation …

Effectiveness Of A Computerized Cognitive Training Program For Reducing Head Impact Kinematics In Youth Ice Hockey Players, Melissa S. Difabio, Thomas A. Buckley Jan 2021

Effectiveness Of A Computerized Cognitive Training Program For Reducing Head Impact Kinematics In Youth Ice Hockey Players, Melissa S. Difabio, Thomas A. Buckley

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 14(1): 149-161, 2021. Cognitive training (CT) is an effective technique to improve neurological performance, but has not been investigated as a head impact primary prevention strategy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the CT’s effectiveness in reducing head impact kinematics in youth ice hockey players. Twenty youth were divided into two groups: a CT and Control group. The CT group performed two 30-minute sessions of IntelliGym CT weekly for 20 weeks and the control group performed two 30-minute sessions weekly evaluating hockey videos. The dependent variables, number of head impacts, cumulative linear acceleration …
