Childhood obesity is on the rise, and interventions targeted at pre-school-aged children are essential for the primary prevention of this disease. Physical activity programming and decreasing screen viewing may be advantageous ways to reduce the early onset of obesity. Parents' perceptions regarding effective tools and programmes to target obesity are needed to develop an efficacious programme. Ten semi-structured focus groups were conducted for this qualitative study. Two experienced moderators facilitated all focus groups which were conducted in local day cares, workplaces and play groups, frequented by parents. All focus groups were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Strategies to ensure trustworthiness of …

Dietary pattern analysis is an epidemiological method designed to consider the complexity of food preferences and diet patterns of populations. Few studies from South Asia have used this methodology to describe population food intake. Our objective was to identify dietary patterns and understand their associations with sociodemographic, anthropometric and life-style factors among low-income Pakistani urban adults. Dietary information was collected by a thirty-three-item FFQ and dietary patterns were derived by principal component analyses in 5491 subjects enrolled in the Control of Blood Pressure and Risk Attenuation (COBRA) study. Three dietary patterns were identified: a fat and sweet pattern characterised by …

Dead People Don’T Eat: Food Governmentenomics And Conflicts-Of-Interest In The Usda And Fda, Gabriela Steier Jan 2013

Dead People Don’T Eat: Food Governmentenomics And Conflicts-Of-Interest In The Usda And Fda, Gabriela Steier

Gabriela Steier

Conflicts of interest permeate the governance of the federal advisory committees that issue recommendations to consumer protection agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and, therefore, American consumers need a federal solution to protect their health from biased recommendations. In order to promote a business-friendly food pyramid, agribusinesses and food industrialists lobby for dietary guidelines to adapt the dietary guidelines illustrated by the food pyramid to boos their sales. The resulting guidelines cause great damage to public health, environmental pollution, and loss of democratic freedoms. As a result, the FDA …

The Interplay Of Health Claims And Taste Importance On Food Consumption And Self-Reported Satiety.Pdf, Maya Vadiveloo, Vicki Morwitz, Pierre Chandon

Maya Vadiveloo

Research has shown that subtle health claims used by food marketers influence pre-intake expectations,
but no study has examined how they influence individuals’ post-consumption experience of satiety after
a complete meal and how this varies according to the value placed on food taste. In two experiments, we
assess how labeling a pasta salad as ‘‘healthy’’ or ‘‘hearty’’ influences self-reported satiety, consumption
volume, and subsequent consumption of another food. Using MANOVA, Study 1 shows that individuals
who report low taste importance consume less—yet feel just as satiated—when a salad is labeled ‘‘hearty’’
rather than ‘‘healthy.’’ In contrast, for individuals with higher …

Associations Between Dietary Variety And Measures Of Body Adiposity: A Systematic Review Of Epidemiological Studies.Pdf, Maya Vadiveloo, L. Beth Dixon, Niyati Parekh

Maya Vadiveloo

Dietary variety is positively correlated with energy intake in most studies. However, the associations between dietary variety and measures of body adiposity are inconsistent in the literature, which limits the development of clear national nutrition recommendations regarding dietary variety. In the present systematic review, we critically evaluate the associations between dietary variety and measures of body adiposity among healthy adults within the existing literature. We conducted a systematic search of the MEDLINE and Web of Science databases in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement to examine these associations. We identified twenty-six studies in total …
