Telomerase Reverse Transcriptase Marks A Novel Population Of Adult Stem Cells In The Mouse Brain That Respond To Metabolic Interventions By Modulating Adult Brain Plasticity, Gabriel S. Jensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) is expressed by quiescent adult stem cells (qASC) in numerous adult murine and human tissues but has never been explored in the adult brain. Here, these data demonstrate that TERT+ cells in the adult mouse brain represent a novel population of multipotent qASCs. TERT+ cells were localized to numerous classical neuro/gliogenic niches including the ventricular-subventricular zone, hypothalamus and olfactory bulb, as well as newly discovered regions of adult tissue plasticity such as the meninges and choroid plexus. TERT+ cells expressed neural stem cell markers such as Nestin and Sox2, but not markers of activated stem/progenitor cells, …

Sleep deficiency is now considered an emerging global epidemic associated with many serious health problems, and a major cause of financial and social burdens. Sleep and mental health are closely connected, further exacerbating the negative impact of sleep deficiency on overall health and well-being. A major drawback of conventional treatments is the wide range of undesirable side-effects typically associated with benzodiazepines and antidepressants, which can be more debilitating than the initial disorder. It is therefore valuable to explore the efficiency of other remedies for complementarity and synergism with existing conventional treatments, leading to possible reduction in undesirable side-effects. This review …

Antioxidant Synergy Of The Glutathione Pathway And Incidence Of Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review, Chelsea Clareann Yager May 2022

Antioxidant Synergy Of The Glutathione Pathway And Incidence Of Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review, Chelsea Clareann Yager

Theses - ALL

Background: The etiopathogenesis dopaminergic neuron dysfunction of Parkinson's Disease (PD) has not been clearly established. Oxidative stress is a commonly proposed causative mechanism for this dysfunction as variations in antioxidant intake have been observed between older adults with and without PD. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the synergistic relationship between antioxidant micronutrients of the glutathione pathway and the incidence of PD in older adults. Methods: This systematic review evaluated the relationship between the intake of vitamins C, D, and E, and selenium, riboflavin and niacin and incidence of PD according to PRISMA guidelines. Four electronic databases …
