Behavioural testing in mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) suffers from lack of standardization and reproducibility issues between laboratories. In order to solve this, a touchscreen system has been developed for mice based on the CANTAB. There are several cognitive dysfunctions that occur due to AD, including deficits in attention that can be tested using the touchscreens. In this study, we tested two mouse models of familial AD (5xFAD and 3xTG) with mutations that lead to an accelerated rate of amyloidosis. Both male and female mice were tested at two separate locations in order to test for the reproducibility of …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) previously associated with Alzheimer's disease on specific domains of cognition, when controlling for Apolipoprotein E gene (APOE), in a sample of individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Methods: The data were drawn from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative database, a comprehensive, longitudinal database of controls, persons with mild cognitive impairment, and persons with mild Alzheimer's disease. Each subject has a full neuropsychological assessment, neuroimaging, genetic sequencing, and physical evaluation. For the purposes of this study, individuals were selected based on the presence of the three …

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases afflicting the modern world. As no cure for AD has yet been discovered we sought to explore a potential treatment option based on the inhibition of retinoic acid (RA) metabolism, the active metabolite of vitamin A. Beta-amyloid plaques form in the brain and decrease cognitive function in AD patients. In a recent preclinical study RA was shown to decrease these plaques and rescue memory deficits in an Alzheimer’s mouse model[i]. One key limitation is that when RA is administered to humans it induces its own breakdown, making …
