Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research Publications
Abundant phytoplankton and bacteria were identified by microscopy and high-throughput 16S rRNA tag Illumina sequencing of samples from water- and ice phases collected during winter at two central European Great Lakes, Balaton and Fertő (Neusiedlersee). Bacterial reads at all sites were dominated (>85%) by Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria. Amongst phototrophs, microscopy and 16S sequencing revealed that both phytoplankton and cyanobacteria were represented, with a median of 1500 cyanobacterial sequence reads amongst 13 samples analyzed. The sequence analysis compared replicate Balaton and Fertő ice and water samples with an outgroup from three Hungarian soda lakes. In particular, both water and ice …
Phytoplankton Composition Within The Tidal Freshwater Region Of The James River, Virginia, Harold G. Marshall, Lubomira Burchardt
Phytoplankton Composition Within The Tidal Freshwater Region Of The James River, Virginia, Harold G. Marshall, Lubomira Burchardt
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Based on a 10.5 year data set, 271 taxa were identified at a single tidal freshwater station in the James River. The mean monthly concentrations of major algal categories, total biomass and productivity are given. Diatom maxima were associated with peak periods of river discharge, with chlorophytes, cyanobacteria, and autotrophic picoplankton abundance and productivity greater during reduced river flow and more stable water conditions.

Chesapeake Bay Phytoplankton: I. Composition, Harold G. Marshall
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
A list of 708 Phytoplankton taxa from 10 algal divisions has been compiled for the Chesapeake Bay and is based on the analysis of 2384 water samples over three decades of study.
