In recent years fishing effort for the blue summer/manna crabs (Portunus pelagicus) in Warnbro Sound has increased dramatically and concerns have been raised about the state of stocks of crabs in Warnbro Sound. As a result of the increased pressure being put on the limited resource, the relationship between professional and recreational user groups has become sensitive. Shark Bay was inscribed on the World Heritage List in December 1991 on the basis of its natural values. The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) is the management agency with responsibility for the oversight and development of management plans dealing with both the marine and terrestrial aspects of the World Heritage Area. This Draft plan deals with the management of fish resources in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area which are the responsibility of the Fisheries Department of Western Australia.

The failures of past restrictions on fishing effort to fully halt the decline of the breeding stock led to the formation of a sub-committee of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee. The prime objective of the sub-committee is to evaluate effective long term strategies for managing the fishery so that breeding stock is maintained at an adequate level despite the inevitable increases in catching efficiency. The purpose of this report is firstly to advise industry of the management proposals for the 1994/95 seasons and secondly to form a basis for industry consultation on management arrangements for the 1995/96 season.

Since 1965, the Western Rock Lobster Fishery has been managed by what is essentially a license limitation scheme invoiving restricted entry for boats, and strict controls on the aggregate number of pots which can be used by the commercial fishing sector. By most measures, management of this fishery has been highly successful. Biological over-exploitation of the fish stock has been prevented, at least until recently. Notwithstanding these achievements, there is widespread concern that the future profitability, and even the viability of the industry is under threat unless the current management practices are reformed. In October 1992 a special Sub-Committee of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee was set up to consider and evaluate future management strategies for the rock lobster fishery. The composition and seasonal abundance patterns for phytoplankton in the Pagan River, Virginia, were determined. This river is characterized as a nutrient enriched system with annual mean levels of total nitrogen and phosphorus at 1.8 and 0.8 mg/I respectively. Three phytoplankton maxima occurred during the year with the highest in fall, followed by summer and spring peaks. A diatom flora was dominant throughout the year at concentrations of 107 to 108 cells/I. Other algal populations exhibited distinct periods of abundance, which seasonally varied in magnitude and time of development. Turbidity levels were high throughout the year, with a mean secchi …

The effects of organic enrichment on benthic community structure were evaluated in a field study conducted in Pocomoke Sound in the vicinity of a seafood processing plant. The empirically derived Species Abundance and Biomass (SAB) curves of Pearson and Rosenberg (1978) were used to model patterns of organic enrichment at the study site, called Pig Point, as well as two reference sites located within Pocomoke Sound. The Split Moving Windows (SMW) method was used to detect the ecotone point as defined in the Pearson and Rosenberg (1978) model and the Two Term Local Quadrat Variance (TTLQV) method was used to …

In contrast to most artificial reefs which are placed at relatively deep depths so as not to interfere with shipping, rocky breakwaters provide important habitat in the intertidal-shallow subtidal zone. This zone is especially preferred for recruitment by many rocky shore fishes. The breakwaters of King Harbor, Redondo Beach, California enhance this zone. Further, the lee of the outer breakwater provides a stable, quiet water area for numerous Young-of-Year (YOY) fishes. By means of SCUBA we monitored YOY abundance from 1986-1990. During these five years there were dramatic natural and anthropogenic disturbances of the habitat. With little inter-annual variation of …

Liver sections of winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) collected from Jamaica Bay and Shinnecock Bay, New York, in 1989, were examined microscopically to determine the pervasiveness of liver lesions observed previously in Jamaica Bay winter flounder. Neoplastic lesions were not detected in fish from Jamaica Bay or the Shinnecock Bay reference site. Twenty-two percent of Jamaica Bay winter flounder examined (n=103) had unusual vacuolization of hepatocytes and biliary pre-ductal and ductal cells (referred to hereafter as the vacuolated cell lesion). The lesion, identical to that found in 25% of Jamaica Bay winter flounder examined in 1988, has previously been …

Otoliths, scales, dorsal spines, and pectoral fin rays were compared to determine the best hardpart for ageing weakfish, Cynoscion regalis. Sectioned otoliths showed the clearest marks and were validated by the marginal increment method for ages 1-5. Traditionally-used scales were found to be less-precise and to underage older fish. Most weakfish from the Chesapeake Bay region were 200-600 mm TL and ages 1-4. Weakfish were not fully-recruited to commercial foodfish grades until age 2. Maximum observed age was 17 from a Delaware Bay fish collected in 1985. Current maximum observed ages were age 12 in Chesapeake Bay and age 11 …

Analyses of particulate material collected by sediment traps moored at a location in the northern Adriatic Sea in 1991 revealed the presence of zooplankton fatty acids, even though zooplankton and other 'swimmers' killed by the trap's preservative were carefully removed. Laboratory experiments were conducted to (1) prove the existence of zooplankton lipids within fecal pellets, (2) exclude the possibility of incomplete separation of swimmers and other material as eventual contamination with polyunsaturated fatty acids in fecal pellets, (3) evaluate the importance of zooplankton lipids to mass flux and (4) reveal the mechanisms which lead to excretion of undigested organic matter, …

The data presented on this map were collected as part of a State of Connecticut and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) cooperative program intended to further understand the marine geology of Connecticut and Long Island Sound. The purpose of this cooperative program is (1) to resolve sedimentologic and oceanographic problems and data gaps in Long Island Sound, (2) to integrate these findings with terrestrial data and the Pleistocene histories of Long Island and Connecticut, and (3) to initiate investigations of offshore resources that are keyed to the better management of Long Island Sound. Various investigations of the population dynamics of blue crabs in Chesapeake Bay indicate that predator-induced mortality in the juvenile phase may determine year-class strength. In a tethering study, which spanned three seasons in shallow-water habitats of the lower York River, daily mortality rates of juvenile crabs were measured across three variables: crab size (30-70 mm carapace width), habitat type (seagrass, mud, and sand), and month (May-November). Vulnerability to predation was consistently lower for larger crabs, approaching a size refuge from predation at approximately 90 mm carapace width. Predation was most intense in unvegetated sand habitats, and significantly lower in seagrass …

Studies were carried out to quantify abundance, mortality, and variability in these parameters, during settlement and recruitment of bivalve mollusks, using the oyster, Crassostrea virginica, as a primary model species. Most work was undertaken in the York River, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, with additional work in the Indian River, Florida. The period chosen, in the bivalve early life history, was from the late planktonic larva to the early benthic juvenile. Studies were designed to specifically examine (a) abundance of late-stage larvae in the plankton, (b) the relationship between larval abundance and settlement, and (c) mortality immediately following settlement.
