Cosmic Ray Particles Images With Orca-Ii Erg, George Mcnamara Aug 2012

Cosmic Ray Particles Images With Orca-Ii Erg, George Mcnamara

George McNamara

Cosmic ray particles image series acquired using a Hamamatsu ORCA-II ERG scientific grade CCD camera, cooled to -60 C. Each image is a consecutive 600 second (10 minute) exposure time with no light to the camera.

While processing the data, I discoverd that the background changed around planes 25 and 227 (see Excel file and jpeg screenshots), so I also processed only planes 025-227 (203 planes total, 2030 minutes, 33.83 hours). the CCD industry "rule of thumb" for a "typical" CCD sensor (i.e. 1/3" CCD) is that one cosmic ray particle strikes a sensor approximately every 30 seconds (assuming not …

Technical Factors Utilised By Elite Archers: Towards Setting An Agenda For Archery, Andrew J. Callaway, Shelley A. Broomfield Jul 2012

Technical Factors Utilised By Elite Archers: Towards Setting An Agenda For Archery, Andrew J. Callaway, Shelley A. Broomfield

Andrew J Callaway

Archery, in one form or another, has been around for thousands of years yet research into what makes an archer 'good' is still in its infancy. There are several variations over bow type and different competitions which can be competed, previous works have focused on Recurve (Olympic) bow types whilst Compound have generally been ignored. Research in the area has tended to focus on muscle activation patterns using Electromyography (EMG) and aiming based studies, where generally scores are used as a factor to correlate to.

AIM: The aim of this research is to offer a development from the use of …

The Prevalence And Identity Of Chlamydia-Specific Ige In Children With Asthma And Other Chronic Respiratory Symptoms, Katir K. Patel, Erica A. Anderson, Paul S. Salva, Wilmore C. Webley Apr 2012

The Prevalence And Identity Of Chlamydia-Specific Ige In Children With Asthma And Other Chronic Respiratory Symptoms, Katir K. Patel, Erica A. Anderson, Paul S. Salva, Wilmore C. Webley

Wilmore C Webley

Background Recent studies have confirmed the presence of viable Chlamydia in the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid of pediatric patients with airway hyperresponsiveness. While specific IgG and IgM responses to C. pneumoniae are well described, the response and potential contribution of Ag-specific IgE are not known. The current study sought to determine if infection with Chlamydia triggers the production of pathogen-specific IgE in children with chronic respiratory diseases which might contribute to inflammation and pathology.

Methods We obtained BAL fluid and serum from pediatric respiratory disease patients who were generally unresponsive to corticosteroid treatment as well as sera from age-matched control …

Introduction To Nanoscopy Nano-Talk, George Mcnamara

George McNamara

T7-1 is the designation for the LMRG Nanoscopy session at ABRF in Orlando, FL, on March 20, 2012. The PDF file here is a draft of my presentation.

May not be very helpful since (1) would probably help to know what is in my head and each slide will [hopefully] prompt me to say, and (2) 10 minute talk so I am going to push the "next slide" button after saying very little.

Pubspectra - Open Data Access Fluorescence Spectra, George Mcnamara Feb 2012

Pubspectra - Open Data Access Fluorescence Spectra, George Mcnamara

George McNamara

The Internet is enabling greater access to spectral imaging publications, spectral graphs, and data than that was available a generation ago. The spectral imaging systems discussed in this issue of Cytometry work because reagent and hardware spectra are reproducible, reusable, and provide input to spectral unmixing and spectral components recognition algorithms. These spectra need to be readily available in order to determine what to purchase, how to use it, and what the output means. We refer to several commercially sponsored and academic spectral web sites and discuss our spectral graphing and data sites. Sites include fluorescent dye graph servers from …

Does Immunocontraception In Feral Horses (Equus Caballus) Extend Reproductive Cycling Beyond The Normal Breeding Season?, Cassandra M.V. Nuñez, James S. Adelman, Daniel I. Rubenstein Jan 2012

Does Immunocontraception In Feral Horses (Equus Caballus) Extend Reproductive Cycling Beyond The Normal Breeding Season?, Cassandra M.V. Nuñez, James S. Adelman, Daniel I. Rubenstein

Cassandra M.V. Nuñez

Although the physiological effects of immunocontraceptive treatment with porcine zona pellucida (PZP) have been well studied, little is known about PZP’s effects on the scheduling of reproductive cycling. Recent behavioral research has suggested that recipients of PZP extend the receptive breeding period into what is normally the non-breeding season. To determine if this is the case, we compiled foaling data from wild horses (Equus caballus) living on Shackleford Banks, North Carolina for 4 years pre- and 8 years post-contraception management with PZP (pre-contraception, n = 65 births from 45 mares; post-contraception, n = 97 births from 46 mares). Gestation lasts …

Biochemical Conversion Of Acid-Pretreated Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes) To Alcohol Using Pichia Stipitis Ncim3497, Sandip S. Magdum, Sandeep M. More, Aiyaj A. Nadaf Dec 2011

Biochemical Conversion Of Acid-Pretreated Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes) To Alcohol Using Pichia Stipitis Ncim3497, Sandip S. Magdum, Sandeep M. More, Aiyaj A. Nadaf

Sandip S. Magdum

Cleaning and removal of water hyacinth from lakes and various historical places government spends lacks of rupees per year. High rate of propagation and easy availability, water-hyacinth could be used as a renewable carbon source for alcohol (fuel ethanol) production. Water-hyacinth’s (Eichhornia crassipes) hemicellulose acid hydrolysate has been utilized as a substrate for alcohol production using Pichia stipitis NCIM3497. Acid hydrolysis were carried out by using (1% v/v) sulfuric acid. Perhydrolysate was detoxified, boiled and overlimed up to pH 10.0 with NaOH to produce acid hydrolysate. Acid hydrolysate had higher fermentability than perhydrolysate. Freshly prepared acid hydrolysate was directly used …

Dietary Calcium Induced Cytological And Biochemical Changes In Thyroid, Amar K. Chandra, Haimanti Goswami, Pallav Sengupta Dec 2011

Dietary Calcium Induced Cytological And Biochemical Changes In Thyroid, Amar K. Chandra, Haimanti Goswami, Pallav Sengupta

Pallav Sengupta, PhD

Certain epidemiological studies revealed correlation between hard water consumption (with high calcium) and thyroid size of the population, though the possible alterations in thyroid physiology upon calcium exposure are still inconclusive. Adult male Wistar strain rats were subjected to calcium treatment at the doses of 0.5g%, 1.0g% and 1.5g% calcium chloride (CaCl2) for 60 days. The parameters studied were -thyroid gland weight, histopathology, histomorphometry; thyroid peroxidase (TPO), 5'- deiodinase I (DI), sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na+-K+-ATPase) activities; serum total and free thyroxine (tT4, fT4), total and free triiodothyronine (tT3, fT3), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. Enlargement of thyroid with hypertrophic and …
