International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 1280-1289, 2019. The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of caffeine supplementation on velocity and power output during bench press and back squat exercises. Resistance trained males (n = 12) consuming less than 300 mg of caffeine daily, were recruited for this study. In a blinded crossover study design, participants supplemented with 6 mg· kg-1 caffeine or placebo (placebo, gluten-free cornstarch) 60 min prior to exercise. Participants completed 3 × 1 repetition with maximum explosive intent at 80% of their 1-RM for bench and squat exercises with two …

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 1161-1168, 2019. The purpose of this case study isto compare a Type 2 diabetic's postprandial glucoregulatory ability under two different room lighting conditions. The subject was a 56-year-old physically active male with well controlled blood glucose levels (HbA1c ≤ 6% for 5 y) from a combination of diet, exercise, and medication. Two hours post evening meal (380 kcal, 18 g fat, 44 g carbohydrate, 12 g protein), a 45 g carbohydrate challenge was given, and blood glucose was measured every 30 minutes for 2.5 hours under three conditions: dim light (<50 lux) (DL), bright light (>40000 lux) …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 786-799, 2019. This study examined glucose and lipid marker responses following a 3-week, ad libitum low-carbohydrate-high-fat diet (LCHF; ~70% kcals from fat, <50 g/day of net carbohydrates) versus the habitual mixed macronutrient diet (HMD) of eight middle-age, trained male runners (40 ±10 years; V̇O2peak = 49 ±4 mL·kg-1·min-1). Blood was drawn at 0600 from an antecubital vein after an overnight fast under conditions of no exercise/ heat stress (NEXH; 48 h of restriction from intense exercise) or 24-h after exercise/heat stress (EXH; 60 min run in hot conditions plus 5-km time trial) for both dietary conditions. Glucose improvement during LCHF approached but did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.07). …

Concordance Among Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Measures Of Percent Body Fat In Athletic Young Adults, Benjamin M. Carrion, Ashley Wells, Jerry L. Mayhew, Alexander J. Koch

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 324-331, 2019. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the agreement among three bioelectrical impedance analysis devices (BIA) in athletic young adults. Fifty-one participants (26 men and 25 women) were assessed for percent body fat (PBF) using an arm-to-arm bipolar single-frequency device (ABIA), a leg-to-leg single-frequency device (LBIA), and an octopolar multi-frequency BIA device (MFBIA). PBF was measured with the three devices in a randomized, counterbalanced order. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed significant (p < 0.001) differences in PBF estimates among all devices (ABIA = 19.1 ± 7.2%, LBIA = 21.6 ±7.5%, and MFBIA = 22.9 ± 8.8%). Pearson’s Correlations revealed a strong relationship between ABIA and MFBIA in both men (r = 0.948) and women (r = 0.947) and a moderately-strong relationship between LBIA and MFBIA (r …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 287-296, 2019. Strength training (ST) is known to promote muscle hypertrophy and body composition adaptations. However, only a few studies investigated the effects of ST combined with antioxidant supplementation (AS) on these adaptations. The aim of this study was to investigate chronic effects of ST combined with AS on fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) of young women. In a double-blinded design, thirty-three subjects (22.9 ± 2.5 years, 57.7 ± 8.4 kg, 1.6 ± 0.6 m) were allocated into three groups: 1) vitamins (n=12), 2) placebo (n=11) and 3) control (n=10). Vitamins and …

Supplementation With A Multi-Ingredient Pre-Workout Supplement Does Not Augment Resistance Training Adaptations In Females, Anna Nelson, Clayton L. Camic, Carl Foster, Brooke Zajac, Kaela Hoecherl, Jacob Erickson, Andrew Jagim Jan 2019

Supplementation With A Multi-Ingredient Pre-Workout Supplement Does Not Augment Resistance Training Adaptations In Females, Anna Nelson, Clayton L. Camic, Carl Foster, Brooke Zajac, Kaela Hoecherl, Jacob Erickson, Andrew Jagim

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 187-202, 2019. Multiple ingredient pre-workout supplements (MIPS) are purported to offer favorable acute metabolic changes potentially leading to improvements in body composition and training adaptations over time. However, there is limited information available regarding the long-term benefits and safety of consuming MIPS, specifically in female populations. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pre-workout ingestion on body composition, training adaptations and select markers of clinical health in recreationally active females after 7 weeks of supplementation and resistance training. Nineteen participants participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study. Experimental …
