Preferences Toward Gender Of Coach And Perceptions Of Roles Of Basketball Coaches, Jacqui L. Kalin, Jennifer J. Waldron
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 8(4): 303-317. Framed within role congruity theory this study examined (a) if female collegiate basketball players have a preference toward male or female head basketball coaches, (b) if the gender and enjoyment level of past head coaches influence preferences toward a male or female head coach and/or influence the perceived roles of women’s basketball head coaches, and (c) if there is a relationship between the perceived roles of women’s basketball head coaches and female collegiate basketball players’ preferences toward male or female head coaches. Children In Organized Hockey: How Much Physical Activity Do They Really Get?, Carla Van Den Berg, Angela M. Kolen
Children In Organized Hockey: How Much Physical Activity Do They Really Get?, Carla Van Den Berg, Angela M. Kolen
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 8(2): 184-191, 2015. For optimal physical and mental health and child growth, development and maturation, the Canadian physical activity guidelines recommend children participate in minimally 60 minutes of moderate intense physical activity each day. It is often believed that children’s participation in sport provides sufficient physical activity to meet these recommendations. The purpose of this study was to measure the amount and intensity of physical activity obtained by children participating in a regularly scheduled ice hockey practice and game. Actigraph GT3X triaxial accelerometers (motion detectors) were used to determine the intensity and amount of physical …

Faculty members mindful of the ticking tenure and promotion clock seek ways to balance the competing and sometimes overwhelming demands of research, teaching, and service. One way to balance these demands is to find opportunities for collaboration with colleagues, especially in research. There are several compelling reasons to pursue joint research projects with colleagues; however, collaboration can be challenging. This article discusses the benefits and challenges of working on collaborative research projects with colleagues from the same discipline as well as across disciplines.

Youth Athlete Leaders' Use Of Transformational Behaviours And Relations To Trust In The Leader And Sport Outcomes, Amy M. Cubitt, Mark Eys
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Leadership is one of the most crucial factors determining whether a group succeeds or fails (Bass, 1990). Furthermore, leaders displaying transformational behaviours are thought to lift followers to higher levels of motivation to get them to perform beyond expectations (Bass, 1985), and they tend to have followers who are more committed and satisfied (Bass & Riggio, 2006). Another outcome of transformational leadership in organizations is that followers are more willing to trust leaders who show care and concern for the follower (Dirks & Ferrin, 2002). The purpose of the present study was to determine if the use of full range …

A Pilot Study Investigating The Reasons For Playing Through Pain And Injury: Emerging Themes In Men’S And Women’S Collegiate Rugby, Leilani Madrigal, Jamie Robbins, Diane L. Gill, Katherine Wurst
Athletic Performance Research
Collegiate rugby is a competitive, collision sport, yet insufficient empirical evidence exists regarding participants’ perspectives on pain and injury. This study addressed male and female rugby players’ experiences with injury, and their views about playing through pain and injury. Eleven rugby players (five male; six female) competing in USA Rugby’s National College 7’s tournament participated in semi structured interviews, which were recorded, transcribed, and content-analyzed. Two major themes emerged: passion for sport and sport ethic. Passion for sport was composed of (a) love of the sport, (b) meaning of the sport, and (c) desire to be on the field. Sport …
