Kinesiology and Public Health

Background: Few population-based studies have examined the behavioral and psychosocial predictors of long-term weight-loss maintenance.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of weight-loss maintenance in a biracial cohort of younger adults.
Methods: This study examined a population-based sample of overweight/obese African-American and white men and women who had 5% weight loss between 1995 and 2000. Subsequent changes in weight, physical activity, and behavioral and psychosocial factors were examined between 2000 and 2005. Analyses were conducted in 2008 –2009.
Results: Among the 1869 overweight/obese individuals without major disease in 1995, …

Kinesiology and Public Health

A two year grant (October 2008-2010) was awarded to the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department (SLO-PHD) so that outside agencies could engage in school wellness policy (SWP) advocacy and community activities to aid in combating the growing epidemic of obesity among the county‘s high risk populations. Under SLO-PHD oversight, Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL-SLO) proposed school district outcomes, objectives, and indicators. (Attachment A provides the SWP rationale while Attachment B contains the HEAL-SLO/TCE purpose and goals.) In March 2009, a research team from newly formed STRIDE at California Polytechnic State University was contracted to review and evaluate Lillian …

The aim of this study was to investigate modifiable predictors of vitamin D status in healthy individuals, aged 55–74, and living across the USA. Vitamin D status [serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D)] was measured along with age and season at blood collection, demographics, anthropometry, physical activity (PA), diet, and other lifestyle factors in 1357 male and 1264 female controls selected from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial (PLCO) cohort. Multivariate linear and logistic regression analyses were used to identify associations with vitamin D status. Three%, 29% and 79% of the population had serum 25(OH)D levels 30 kg/m2 …

Perceived Personal And Social Competence: Development Of Valid And Reliable Measures, Joyce V. Fetro, Darson L. Rhodes, David W. Hey

Kinesiology and Public Health

During the last 20 years, youth programming has shifted from risk reduction to youth development. While numerous instruments exist to measure selected individual characteristics/competencies among youth, a comprehensive instrument to measure four constructs of personal and social skills could not be identified. The purpose of this study was to develop four assessment instruments to measure perceived personal/social competence. Specifically, this study focused on identifying items to measure: (a) intrapersonal skills, (b) interpersonal skills, (c) coping skills, and (d) judgment skills. A Delphi panel of nine professionals in health education, youth development programming, and instrument development established content validity. Readability of …

Improved Dietary Variety And Adequacy But Lower Dietary Moderation With Acculturation In Chinese Women In The United States, Amy Liu, Zekarias Berhane, Marilyn Tseng Mar 2010

Improved Dietary Variety And Adequacy But Lower Dietary Moderation With Acculturation In Chinese Women In The United States, Amy Liu, Zekarias Berhane, Marilyn Tseng

Kinesiology and Public Health

Acculturation is associated with increased chronic disease risk among Asian Americans, but its association with different aspects of diet quality remains unclear. Associations of acculturation with diet quality were examined in a convenience sample of 243 Chinese participants in a study of diet and mammographic density in the Philadelphia region between January 2002 to May 2003. An acculturation index was created based on self-reported English proficiency and within-and cross-ethnicity social interactions. Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) scores were based on responses to an 88-item food frequency questionnaire. Odds ratios (ORs) for falling into a higher vs lower quartile for DQI-I and …

Pregnancy: A "Teachable Moment" For Weight Control And Obesity Prevention, Suzanne Phelan Feb 2010

Pregnancy: A "Teachable Moment" For Weight Control And Obesity Prevention, Suzanne Phelan

Kinesiology and Public Health

Excessive gestational weight gain has been shown to relate to high-postpartum weight retention and the development of overweight and obesity later in life. Because many women are concerned about the health of their babies during pregnancy and are in frequent contact with their healthcare providers, pregnancy may be an especially powerful "teachable moment" for the promotion of healthy eating and physical activity behaviors among women. Initial research suggests that helping women gain the recommended amount during pregnancy through healthy eating and physical activity could make a major contribution to the prevention of postpartum weight retention. However, more randomized controlled trials …

What Type Of Weight Loss Program Do Postpartum Women Want? Treatment Preferences Of Postpartum Women In Two Community Settings, Suzanne Phelan, Katelyn Smith, John-Mark Steele, Dawn Wilt, Sally Ames, Linda Mcclure

Kinesiology and Public Health

Approximately 25% of women experience major weight gain after pregnancy, retaining more than 4.5 kg. Preliminary efforts to promote postpartum weight loss have encountered some success, but little is known about the types of programs of greatest interest to postpartum women. The purpose of this study was to better understand the weight control needs and preferences of postpartum women in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Nutrition program (N = 100) and an Adult Education Parenting (AEP) program (N = 75). A self-report questionnaire was used to collect participants’ demographic and weight history information as well as participants’ degree of …
