The Effects Of Attentional Focus Instructions On Approach Jump Performance, Hanwen Liu May 2023

The Effects Of Attentional Focus Instructions On Approach Jump Performance, Hanwen Liu

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Introduction: Attentional focus is a crucial factor that impacts motor learning and performance. Instructions that direct performers’ attention externally (i.e., toward the effects of movements) have been shown to enhance performance compared to those that direct attention internally (i.e., toward the body’s movements). Research has also demonstrated that novices perform better when they are instructed to focus externally on the process of skill execution versus the outcome. However, this effect has not been tested in complex jumping skills that are important in many sports.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to test the effects of internally and externally directed …

Effects Of Variable Resistance Training On Kinetic And Kinematic Outcomes During A Heavy Conventional Deadlift, Timothy J. Gerking Oct 2018

Effects Of Variable Resistance Training On Kinetic And Kinematic Outcomes During A Heavy Conventional Deadlift, Timothy J. Gerking

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Variable Resistance Training (VRT), loading elastic band tension on a barbell, has shown improvements in force, power, and velocity. Studied extensively in the squat and bench press, VRT is less researched in the context of the deadlift. Additionally, while no acute VRT deadlift studies exist where intensity was ≥ 90% 1- RM, some heavy VRT studies suggest that at approximately 90% 1-RM, less band tension (BT) is required to enhance force and power than seen at lower intensities in existing research. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of VRT on peak relative vertical ground reaction …

Twenty-Four Hour Post-Exercise Hypotension Following Concurrent Cardiovascular And Resistance Exercise, Whitley J. Stone May 2014

Twenty-Four Hour Post-Exercise Hypotension Following Concurrent Cardiovascular And Resistance Exercise, Whitley J. Stone

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Despite pharmacological advances, exercise remains a cost effective preventative for cardiovascular disease (CVD) by acutely and chronically lowering systolic blood pressure (SBP). Although numerous studies have investigated aerobic and resistance training’s role in eliciting an acute SBP response termed post-exercise hypotension (PEH), few researchers have investigated how performing both cardiovascular and weight training in a single session (concurrent training) or how different prescriptions for order of exercise modality will elicit this PEH response; no known studies have attempted altering the order of exercise types within each session. This study seeks to determine if the order of exercise type will affect …
