Small openings were cleared by bulldozing in montane aspen Populus tremuloides forest in southwestern Alberta in 1976. Production of browse, forbs and grasses was measured at the end of the growing season 2 and 7 years later. In the 2nd year production of woody twigs was significantly higher than on uncut controls (87.0 kg/ha compared to 56.0 kg/ha). In the 7th year twig production on cut blocks still exceeded that on the control blocks (53.9 kg/ha compared to 35.5 g/ha). Moose (Alces alces L.) browsing was studied in young Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands mixed with deciduous trees in high-density winter ranges. The proportional use of twig biomass decreased as the availability increased. The total as well as proportional biomass consumption were higher on the moist than on the dry type of forest. The per tree consumption of pine was higher on the moist type, where the availability of pine was lower. Heart rate and insect annoyance were studied in hand-reared adult moose (Alces alces) cows released into a 65-ha enclosure in April, May, July, and October. Radiant heat load exerted the greatest influence on heart rates of bedded moose in all months. Wind and insects had lesser, but significant effect during April and May, respectively. Respiratory rate was related to ambient temperature showing a dramatic increase about 14℃.

We assessed the effects of fire on the quality of herbaceous and browse forage for elk (Gervus e/aphus) and domestic sheep in the aspen (Populus tremu/oides) forest type. Selected forage species were sampled on burned and adjacent unburned areas during the summers of the first and second years after autumn prescribed burning of three sites in southeastern Idaho. These samples were analyzed for in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), crude protein, calcium, and phosphorus. This aspen type has a highly nutritious understory irrespective of burning. We found additional improvement in forage quality as a result of prescribed burning. In the …

Numbers of breeding birds were estimated for various sizes and ages of clearcuts, for edge habitat created by the clearcuts, leave strips between clearcuts, and uncut aspen forest (controls). Total numbers of birds were not different among three size classes or five age classes of clearcuts. Total were lower on clearcuts than on edges but not different from controls or leave strips.

Breeding birds on an aspen forest in southwestern Colorado increased in species diversity after 25% of the timber sale area forest was clearcut in patches of 3 to 20 acres. Bird population density on the forest with clearcuts was not significantly different from that on an uncut forest. Of the 20 species evaluated, six were more and one was less abundant than on the uncut forest.

When traditional roughages are in short supply or high in price, other fibrous feed sources for ruminants should be considered if available at a competitive price. One such fibrous material shown to have potential as a ruminant feed is the aspen tree (Populus tremuloides Michx.) harvested in its entire form to include bark, leaves and trunk. The aspen tree is the most widespread tree species in North America and the least utilized.
