This paper presents equations for predicting future basal area, number of trees, and total cubic-foot volume of aspen stands in Minnesota. The modeling methodology uses a fully-stocked yield table for quaking aspen as a density standard. A relative density change equation based on observed growth from permanent plots provides the basis for predicting the future relative density and therefore the future basal area, number of trees, and volume. The equations are easy to apply and require only site index, age, and beginning basal area, number of trees, and volume. North. J. Appl. For. 10(1):20-27.

Browse And Herbage Yield Following Clearing In The Alberta Montane Aspen Ecoregion, Edmund S. Telfer

Small openings were cleared by bulldozing in montane aspen Populus tremuloides forest in southwestern Alberta in 1976. Production of browse, forbs and grasses was measured at the end of the growing season 2 and 7 years later. In the 2nd year production of woody twigs was significantly higher than on uncut controls (87.0 kg/ha compared to 56.0 kg/ha). In the 7th year twig production on cut blocks still exceeded that on the control blocks (53.9 kg/ha compared to 35.5 g/ha). The volume of healthy trees of commercial size in the maple-birch forest type measured during the last two Forest Inventory Analysis surveys of Wisconsin grew at 2 to 3%/yr for sawtimber, and 3 to 4% for pole timber, with substantial differences among species. However, from 1967 to 1989, the real price of logs decreased or remained constant for most grades and species. The decrease was especially large for high grade logs. The only exceptions were red oak and elm, whose prices increased at i to 2 %/yr, for all grades. As a result, the average value growth rate of the …

Moose (Alces alces L.) browsing was studied in young Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands mixed with deciduous trees in high-density winter ranges. The proportional use of twig biomass decreased as the availability increased. The total as well as proportional biomass consumption were higher on the moist than on the dry type of forest. The per tree consumption of pine was higher on the moist type, where the availability of pine was lower.
