Grafting Jig For Small-Diameter American Beech: Proof Of Concept And First Print File, Andrea L. Myers, Tara Bal
Grafting Jig For Small-Diameter American Beech: Proof Of Concept And First Print File, Andrea L. Myers, Tara Bal
Michigan Tech 3D Designs
This tool may be useful for grafting other small diameter woody plant species. This jig can be used by non-experts to simplify and standardize the initial cuts necessary for side grafting small-diameter American beech. The initial file which is suitable for 3D printing is available here, whereas we have the intention of undergoing iterative revisions to refine the tool, considering different sizes and modifications. Future versions will be added through the same avenue as advancements are made.

It’S Not About Wolves: Interdisciplinary Knowledge For A Sustainable, Just And Prosperous World, John A. Vucetich
Distinguished Lecture Series
Dr. John Vucetich presented the Fall 2017 Distinguished Lecture at the Michigan Tech Research Forum. His lecture, It’s Not About Wolves: Interdisciplinary Knowledge for a Sustainable, Just and Prosperous World, took place November 7, 2017. Vucetich discussed environmental ethics and how it bridges the world of environmental sciences and natural resource management.
"Much of my work is aimed at developing insights that emerge from the synthesis of science and ethics,” says Vucetich, a professor in the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science (SFRES) at Michigan Technological University. "Environmental ethicists and environmental scientists have a common goal, which is to …

Remotely Piloted Aircraft: Forest And Ecology Applications, Curtis Edson
TechTalks
In the summer of 2017 three new research projects were started using remotely piloted aircraft (drone) to collect forest and ecological data. In Michigan Technological University's research forest (Ford Forest) we began a forest biomass study by collecting imagery, including visible spectrum from a drone, as well as hyperspectral and LiDAR imagery from a human pilot aircraft; in the Hiawatha National Forest we collected visible and near-infrared (NIR) imagery for invasive species remediation and coastal wetlands mapping; and in Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta Canada we collected visible and NIR imagery in support of an ongoing ecological study observing interactions …

Climate Mitigation Through Food-Energy-Water (Few) Conservation, Kathleen E. Halvorsen
Climate Mitigation Through Food-Energy-Water (Few) Conservation, Kathleen E. Halvorsen
TechTalks
Climate change is our biggest challenge to date. Moving toward mitigating or reducing the likelihood of catastrophic climate change is therefore critical. We need to engage all the "wedges" or strategies we can to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and achieve this, including increased energy conservation, consumption of low carbon renewable energy sources, and carbon sequestration. Research integrating social, natural, and engineering sciences that includes non-academic organizations is key to reducing emissions across the energy production and consumption supply chain. This presentation describes such research studying greenhouse gas emissions reductions through household scale food-energy-water consumption in the USA and Netherlands.
Bird Response To Land Use Change In Northern Argentina, David J. Flaspohler
Bird Response To Land Use Change In Northern Argentina, David J. Flaspohler
TechTalks
Land use change is responsible for changes in wildlife populations including declines for many species. When one land cover type is converted into another for forestry, agriculture or pasture, some bird species are harmed while others may be favored. Understanding how biodiversity responds to land use change is essential to allowing us to anticipate and respond to management options and economic drivers of change. We studied the response of a diverse bird community in an historically grassland portion of northern Argentina, where eucalyptus plantations are expanding rapidly to support timber, pulp and incipient bioenergy industries. Plantations contained the fewest bird …
The Forest Biomaterials Initiative At Michigan Tech And Across Michigan, Mark Rudnicki
The Forest Biomaterials Initiative At Michigan Tech And Across Michigan, Mark Rudnicki
TechTalks
The first statewide effort for a broad, cradle-to-cradle perspective of forest biomaterials originated at the MTU School of Forest Resources in 2012 and held a statewide meeting in Traverse City in 2013. The biomaterials initiative is currently a MTU university wide initiative, and is proceeding with development of educational and research programs that are envisioned to span most schools and colleges at MTU. Because of the work done in Traverse City and subsequent meetings, the Michigan Forest Biomaterials Institute (MiFBI) has evolved into an independent nonprofit with an expansive mission to enhance quality of life in Michigan by fostering sustainable …

A system for and method of evaluating a log. The system includes an analysis module having at least one input terminal connectable to the at least one input device. The at least one input terminal is operable to receive at least one signal representing at least one measured property of the log and at least one determined parameter of the log determined in response to an energy being applied to the log. The analysis module further includes a processor coupled to the at least one input terminal. The processor determines a predictive modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the log based …
