Camera Trap Survey Suggests Forestry And Prescribed Burns Attract Wildlife, But May Not Enhance Diversity, Melissa S. Vilgats, Ryan Ott, Stephanie S. Coster

This study explored whether habitat management techniques such as forest thinning and burning promoted biodiversity. Fifteen camera trap stations were established at Fort A.P. Hill in Bowling Green, VA across forest stands with low, medium, and high basal area. Camera traps were deployed for a total of 532 trap nights, and trap success and species diversity were calculated using Shannon’s index. At each site, the distance to trafficable roadways and water sources, vegetation composition, and the percent groundcover, canopy cover, and understory were measured. Socioeconomic pressures require forest management to address the impacts of climate change. However, we must ask, Are current forest policies sufficient to deal with the impacts of climate change? Here, we report on two surveys of forest stakeholders in Maine including woodlot owners and forestry professionals and discuss their perceptions of the barriers to climate change adaptation. We conclude with several policy directions including reevaluating existing policies, expanding incentivebased policies, integrating adaptation efforts into mitigation efforts, and increasing communication and outreach.

Existing research has demonstrated that forest management practices (e.g., clear-cutting, planting) can dramatically impact animal communities. This is particularly the case with amphibian populations due to their sensitivity to microhabitat alterations. However, few studies have investigated the manner by which forest management practices impact the abiotic variables most relevant to healthy amphibian populations. In this study we investigated how spatially localized forest management practices (i.e., at the scale of hundreds of meters) alter the microhabitat variables that have been shown important to amphibian population distributions. Forest inventory (FI) is the most challenging stage of forest management and planning process. Therefore, in situ surveys are often reinforced by modern remote sensing (RS) methods for collecting forestry-related data more efficiently. This study tests a stateof- the-art data collection method for practical use in the Turkish FI system for the first time. To this end, forest sampling plots were conventionally measured to collect dendrometric data from 437 trees in Artvin and Saçınka Forest Enterprises. Seven different nonlinear height (h)-diameter (d) models were developed and compared for brutian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.), black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold), and Taurus cedar (Cedrus libani A.Rich.) in southern Turkey. Residual analysis was conducted to identify the error structure. A weighting factor of w_i =1/d was found to be appropriate for achieving the equal error variance assumption. The performance of the models was compared and evaluated based on 6 statistical criteria and residual analysis. Results suggested that the Gompertz model was superior to the other models in terms of its predictive ability. These tree species were located throughout the …

Developing Alternative Wood Harvesting Strategies With Linear Programming In Preparing Forest Management Plans, Emi̇n Zeki̇ Başkent, Sedat Keleş
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
In this paper, the process of developing alternative wood harvesting strategies in forest management planning is presented. Alternative wood harvesting strategies based on linear programming (LP) include a planning horizon of 100 years, an objective of the maximization of net present value (NPV) and various constraints such as classical volume control (even flow) and wood assortments. Model outputs are presented and discussed along with NPVs and amounts of wood assortments by alternative wood harvesting strategies consisting of various discount rates and wood assortments.

At the close of the 19th century, the state’s forest area was at an all time low; land ownership was changing rapidly with the emergence of new paper companies; a growing number of wildlife species were threatened; and widespread unease over the future of Maine’s forests was evident. Today a similar unease is evident. Many believe the state’s spruce-fir forest is being overcut; land ownership is changing rapidly; fear exists that the sustainability of Maine’s forests; and wildlife populations have been severely compromised.
