Maine Lumber Production, 1839-1997: A Statistical Overview, Lloyd C. Irland Jun 1998

Maine Lumber Production, 1839-1997: A Statistical Overview, Lloyd C. Irland

Maine History

Complementing the qualitative account of forestry's impact provided by Geoffrey Carpenter, Lloyd Irland gives us a broad statistical overview of the industry, its changing economic fortunes, and its impact on the environment of the north woods. The data, while not always precise, reveal the terms upon which the state's decision-makers historically viewed the forest and its future. Mr. Irland is private forestry consultant in Winthrop, Maine, who has written widely on New England forestry topics, including Wildlands and Woodlots: The Story Of New England's Forests (1982).

Deforestation In Nineteenth-Century Maine: The Record Of Henry David Thoreau, Geoffrey Paul Carpenter Jun 1998

Deforestation In Nineteenth-Century Maine: The Record Of Henry David Thoreau, Geoffrey Paul Carpenter

Maine History

Thoreau’s Maine Woods, a record of three trips made between 1846 and 1857, offers a combination of literary metaphor and precise botanical and topographical observation. Comparing Thoreau’s journals with recent advances in forest ecology, author Geoffrey Paul Carpenter reveals a detailed picture of the various ways in which logging activity changed the forests, lakes, and rivers of Maine. Carpenter demonstrates that a precise understanding of forest history depends not only on traditional statistical sources, but also on the subjective personal testimony found in the literary record.

Trees Working In Western Australia, Dave Berry

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

There is an air of inevirability about farm forestry - no-one disputs that planting trees is a sure route to curbing agriculture's serious land degredation problem. Dave Berry talks with some of the key players developing the industry.

Different soil tillage treatments and lentil-wheat versa fallow- wheat rotations systems resp. were examined in these experiments. According to experimental results highest root-length densities (RLD s ) of winter sown lentils were obtained in soil layers of 0-20 and 20-40 cm in comparison to deeper soil layers of 20 cm each down to 1 …

A State-Dependent Model Of Forest Floor Development, Ertuğrul Bi̇lgi̇li̇ Jan 1998

A State-Dependent Model Of Forest Floor Development, Ertuğrul Bi̇lgi̇li̇

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

A state-dependent, dynamic forest floor development model is presented. The model considers litterfall as input. The decomposition of the litter was modelled as influenced by the quality of litter and miccroclimatic conditions (temperature and moisture). Microclimatic conditions were determined based on weather data and stand structure. The predictions of the model compared with an independent data set suggested that the model functions realistically under a range of weather and stand conditions. The resulting model should be valuable in the prediction of fire behavior.

An Investigation On The Logging Machines From The Economical And The Technical Point Of View At Giresun Forest District, H. Hulusi̇ Acar

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In forestry, transportation of harvested woods from compartments is very difficult, expensive and time-consuming task. Forests covering generally high and steep slopes of mountainous areas in Eastern Black Sea Region make the problem extremely dif-ficult. Transportation of forest products from forest to the landing have been practiced various forms. Studies were conducted on the loading, skidding and stacking machines and mobile skylines at Giresun Forest District. Furthermore, logging machines in the region were found very important from the technical and the economical point of view. In ad-dition, the rent values for loging machines is found to be insufficient.

Issues Related To Marketing And Extension For Sustainable Agricultural Production In Turkey, Sedef Akgüngör, Taner Kumuk Jan 1998

Issues Related To Marketing And Extension For Sustainable Agricultural Production In Turkey, Sedef Akgüngör, Taner Kumuk

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Sustainable agriculture, although a difficult term to define operationally, includes the practice of low input agricultural production technologies. An important condition to adopt these technologies is the access to markets for low input agricultural products. Ability to market these products at profitable prices would provide incentives for farmers to adopt the necessary methods. Contract farming is considered to be an effective means to introduce new production technologies to the farmers by providing assurance on prices and markets for agricultural products. Public extension agencies in developing countries may therefore be concerned to direct their efforts to introduce contract farming models to …

Field experiments were conducted to determine the optimum sowing date of soybean, and effects of inoculation and sowing date on the yield and yield components. P-9292 soybean cultivar was evaluated either inoculated with Rhizobium japonicum or not inoculated …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Safflower ( Carthamus tinctorius L.) can be a potential oilseed crop for the low-rainfall areas of Central Anatolia, Turkey. The purpose of this study was to determine response of safflower cultivars to weed and the row spacing. The experimental design was used a split-split plot arrangement in a completely randomized block with 3 replications. Main plots were cultivars (5-118 and 5-154), sub plots were weed treatment (weed not removed and weed removed manually) and sub-sub plots were row spacing (20, 40 and 60 cm). The hand weeding decreased the weed density by 75.3%, conversely increased the safflower yield by 36.3%. …

Assessment Of Response To Drought Stress Of Chickpea(Cicer Arietinuml.) Lines Under Rainfed Conditions, Cengiz Toker, M. İlhan Çağirgan

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Totally sixty four chickpea lines were grown for assesment of response to drought stress in the stress and non-stress environments under rainfed conditions. The seed yield of the lines when grown under the non-stress condition increased at a rate of 53% over the in stress condition. The line, FLIP 92-154C, was determinated as the best tolerant line to drought stress environment under the field condition. Also, seed yield strongly correlated with biological yield, harvest index, mean productivity, tolerance to drought stress and drought susceptibility index in the stress environment.
