Food Safety Risk In An Indoor Microgreen Cultivation System, Gina Marie Misra May 2020

Food Safety Risk In An Indoor Microgreen Cultivation System, Gina Marie Misra

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Microgreens are immature sprouts of edible plants, sharing some similarities with sprouted seeds and petite leafy greens. Since they are most often grown in containers in buildings or greenhouses, they present a new area for food safety research at the intersection of the built environment and produce farming. Contamination by human pathogens has been extensively studied in other types of produce typically eaten raw, including sprouted seeds, which have been implicated in numerous outbreaks of salmonellosis over the last several decades. There is a paucity of knowledge about the microgreen sector of the fresh-cut industry; thus, it was determined that …

Determination Of Active Components In Ciqishencapsule And Its Safety Evaluation, Wang Xiao-Lin, Dai Li-Ying, Di Song, Zhong Fang-Li Apr 2020

Determination Of Active Components In Ciqishencapsule And Its Safety Evaluation, Wang Xiao-Lin, Dai Li-Ying, Di Song, Zhong Fang-Li

Food and Machinery

The ginsenoside in Ciqishen capsule was detected by using HPLC,and the polysaccharide was determined by UV. The safety of Ciqishen capsule were evaluated by the acute toxicity test in rats and mice, with the mutation tests of salmonella test (Ames test),the micronucleus tests of mice bone marrow polychromatic erythrocytes and the experiment of mouse sperm deformity, and the 30-day feeding test was used for toxicological study. The results showed that the average contents of ginsenoside and polysaccharide in Ciqishen capsule were 0.273,3.190 g/100 g. The acute toxicity result showed that the biggest tolerance dose of Ciqishen capsule on rats and …

Verification Of Anti-Adhesive Performance Of Modified Polypropylene Films And Its Packaging Application, Sui Yue, Yang Fu-Xin, Cheng Long, Xu Tao Mar 2020

Verification Of Anti-Adhesive Performance Of Modified Polypropylene Films And Its Packaging Application, Sui Yue, Yang Fu-Xin, Cheng Long, Xu Tao

Food and Machinery

Firstly, measured the contact angle of yogurt on films, verified the anti-adhesive effect of films with two different methods and then tested the hygienic performance of the modified films. The results showed that: 7% silicone oil + 93% polypropylene mixed modified film and 8% polytetrafluoroethylene + 92% polypropylene modified film had the best performance. The contact angles were: 85.97° and 98.84° respectively. After the verification of two anti-adhesive methods, the yogurt residues of the 7% silicone oil-modified film were 28.67% and 23.45% respectively, and the yogurt residues of the 8% polytetrafluoroethylene-modified film were 26.61% and 23.11% respectively; After safety verification, …

Handling Compressed Gases And Cryogens, Roger Barth Jan 2020

Handling Compressed Gases And Cryogens, Roger Barth

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Compressed gases and cryogenic liquids are widely used in beer brewing and serving. The nature of these materials can present mechanical, toxic, asphyxiation, extreme cold, and chemical hazards. This article explains the equipment and procedures for safe use of compressed gases and cryogenic liquids frequently used in the beer industry. Guidelines for labeling, storage, transit within a facility, connecting to brewing or serving systems, and checking for leaks are presented. Specifics regarding hazards associated with oxygen (chemical hazard), carbon dioxide (toxic), and nitrogen (asphyxiant) are discussed. Special procedures and precautions for two frequently used cryogens, liquid nitrogen and bulk carbon …

Assessing The Food Safety Culture Of A Dairy Processing Facility In Ireland, Emer Marie Hughes Jan 2020

Assessing The Food Safety Culture Of A Dairy Processing Facility In Ireland, Emer Marie Hughes

Theses

ood safety culture has become a prominent topic, with food safety management systems (FSMS), food safety regulations, training and auditing being challenged due to the reoccurrence of foodborne outbreaks. Due to its link with food safety performance, food organisations must have the ability to accurately measure their food safety culture to ensure it is an integral part of the company’s culture. The food safety culture of a dairy processing facility in Ireland was measured quantitatively using a questionnaire which was an adaptation of a food safety climate self-assessment tool. The questionnaire assessed the human dimension of food safety culture such …
