The poplar borer is the most commonly submitted wood borer found in aspens and other poplars in Utah. While large trees are seldom killed by this pest, it can cause the decline of trees, weakening of branches or the bole (which promotes wind breakage), and allows the introduction of pathogens. The scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) are one of the most successful groups of plant-feeding arthropods. Most species of shade trees, fruit trees and ornamental shrubs are subject to scale insect attacks. Based on the review of the literature and survey results, the host plant list of the scale insects in South Korea was developed and updated. Herein, an updated list of 253 species of host plants in 71 families associated with scale insects is provided and 162 species in 15 scale insect families are listed.

The health and viability of colonies of the honey bee, Apis mellifera, in the United States have fluctuated dramatically over the past decade. This poses a substantial threat to agricultural production in this country. Currently, no single factor has been identified for this decline. Rather, it has been suggested that the interaction between multiple biotic and abiotic stressors may be responsible. Among these factors are pesticides, habitat loss, climate and weather, parasites and pathogens, and colony management techniques. This catalogue comprises records of 355 species of moths (non-papilionoid Lepidoptera) from Tobago, of which 15 are partially identified. Of this total, all except 17 (5%) are known from Trinidad, although not all these records from Trinidad are published yet. Of these 17, eleven are expected to occur in Trinidad as they also occur on the mainland of South America and two are only known from Tobago but will probably also occur in Trinidad. This leaves just four species (1% of the total) that are known from the Lesser Antilles and are currently not known from further south than Tobago. …

Following compilation of distribution records and seasonal flight activity information for 106 metallic wood-boring beetle (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) species for Tennessee, maps were updated to provide county-level collection notations for 10,543 published records and specimen collections made from 1934 to 2013. County collection tallies across the ecoregions in Tennessee are also presented. Maps for individual species highlight gaps in key geographic areas where specimens have not been collected and can be valuable for future biosurveillance, monitoring and management efforts for these economically and ecologically important insects.

The Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), is found throughout most of the United States and Mexico and has been introduced into Europe and parts of Asia. Mexico is considered the center of origin for this pest. The Colorado potato beetle is an important pest of Solanaceous plants. Potato is the preferred host, but this insect pest also will feed on tomato, eggplant, pepper, tobacco, ground cherry, horse-nettle, nightshade, belladonna, thorn apple, henbane, buffalobur and other related plant species.

The pickleworm, Diaphania nitidalis (Stoll) (Family Crambidae, previously Pyralidae), is found from Canada into parts of South America, and as far west as Oklahoma and Nebraska. It is an important pest of numerous cucurbits. Summer squash is the preferred host, but it also feeds on cantaloupe, cucumber, pumpkin and winter squash. Late-planted cantaloupes are heavily attacked in some areas.

The melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, is found throughout most of the temperate, subtropic and tropic regions of the world. Although it is a cosmopolitan species, its origin is unknown. The melon aphid has a wide host range and can feed on watermelon, cucumber, cantaloupe, squash, pumpkin, asparagus, spinach, bean, beet, cowpea, tomato, pepper, eggplant, okra, citrus, cotton, hibiscus and many weeds (such as jimsonweed and pigweed). In the South, cotton is an important host, which explains the use of the second common name, “cotton aphid.”

Most household pests are insects and are commonly called “bugs.” Other organisms such as spiders, scorpions, centipedes, millipedes, ticks, sowbugs, pillbugs, mites, rats, mice, snakes, bats, squirrels, birds, molds and fungi may enter homes. In Tennessee, one or more of about 40 common pests are found in every home at one time or another. Even the most conscientious person cannot always avoid an occasional pest infestation.
