The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
A study was conducted in six different localities around Skardu, Pakistan to document the butterfly fauna of that region. The study revealed that 16 species in 5 families and 14 genera occur in the area. The families include: Papilionidae (represented only by the genus Parnassius); Pieridae (genera Pieris, Pontia, and Colias are represented); Lycaenidae (genera Lycaena, Everes, Aricia, Plebejus, Zizeeria, and Zizina are represented); Nymphalidae (only two genera, Aglais and Cynthia are represented); and Satyridae (represented by the genera Pararge and Maniola).

Resistance to methyl-parathion among Nebraska western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, populations is associated with increased hydrolytic metabolism of an organophosphate insecticide substrate. An electrophoretic method to identify resistant individuals based on the staining intensity of esterase isozymes on nondenaturing polyacrylamide gels was developed. Three groups of esterases (I, II, and III) were visible on the gels, but only group II esterase isozymes were intensified in resistant populations. A total of 26 and 31 field populations of western corn rootworms from Nebraska (in 1998 and 1999, respectively) were assessed with nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) assays and diagnostic concentration …

The lesser cornstalk borer, Elasmopalpus lignosellus (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), maize causes the symptom known as “dead heart” to maize. The objective of this research was to evaluate if Bt maize would protect seedlings against lesser cornstalk borer damage and whether different temperatures affect the insect-plant interaction.
Two experiments were conducted. Seeds from Pioneer Bt maize hybrids P33G27, P34R07, P34G82, P33A14, and P34D34, expressing the toxin Cry1A(b) were obtained from the market. The purpose of this application, under Articles 23.9.3 and 8 1.2.3 of the Code, is to conserve the generic name Bolboceras Kirby, 1819 for a group of scarab beetles (family GEOTRUPIDAE) by giving it conditional precedence over the older name Odonteus Samouelle, 18 19 whenever they are considered to be synonyms. The name Bolboceras is threatened by a single usage by Krelljn 1990 of the otherwise unused name Odonteus.

A comprehensive, systematic treatment of the poorly studied Neotropical genus Trizogeniates (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Geniatini) is provided. This revision includes a key to species, species descriptions, and distributional and temporal data. Based on this study, the genus Trizogeniates now includes 30 species. The following eight species are new: Trizogeniates ohausi Villatoro, T. venezuelensis Villatoro, T. geminatus Villatoro, T. caiporae Villatoro, T. crispospinatus Villatoro, T. catsus Villatoro, T. aphilus Villatoro, and T. eris Villatoro. Trizogeniates zischkai Martínez is a new synonym of T. temporalis Ohaus; T. grandis Ohaus is a new synonym of T. cribicollis (Lucas). T. andicola Ohaus is a …

Boxelder bugs, Boisea trivittata (Say), are a nuisance, especially during the cool autumn months when they cluster in large numbers on the sides of trees, houses and other structures. This pest enters buildings through cracks and openings and spends the winter hibernating behind exterior siding and in attics, soffits, wall voids, window/door casings and similar protected areas. Boxelder bugs may also take refuge in soil and leaf litter next to foundations. We report a protocol using a common desk-top scanner and public domain software for measuring existing leaf area and leaf area removed as a result of herbivory. We compared the accuracy and precision of this method to that of a standard leaf area meter. Both methods were used to measure metal disks of a known area, the area of soybean (Glycine max L.) leaves, and the area removed by simulating leaf feeding with a hole-punch. We varied the amount of injury across a low, medium, and high degree of simulated feeding. The mean area of 10 cm2 and 50 cm2 …

Previous literature recognized twenty species of wax scales occurring in the Neartic region with nine of those occurring in Florida. This number has grown recently with the establishment of the Ceroplastes rusci and the discovery of C. feltyii (new species). A description and illustration of C. feltyii is provided along with a key to all of the wax scales currently found in Florida.

Descriptions and a key are provided for 7 South American species of Noterapion Kissinger (2002) (type species Apion meorrhynchum, Philippi and Philippi) including N. bruchi (Beguin-Billecocq), N. meorrhynchum (Philippi and Philippi), N. philippianum (Alonso-Zarazaga) and four new species described from Chile: N. chilense Kissinger, N. kuscheli Kissinger, N. nothofagi Kissinger, and N. saperion Kissinger. A lectotype designation is published for Apion meorrhynchum Philippi and Philippi and Apion vestitum Philippi and Philippi. Apion fuegianum Enderlein and A. pingue Beguin-Billecocq are synonymized with N. meorrhynchum (Philippi and Philippi), new synonymy.

In the insect order Hymenoptera, which includes wasps, bees, and ants, females normally develop from fertilized eggs and are diploid, while males develop from unfertilized eggs and are haploid. Underlying mechanisms of sex determination are more complex and vary among different hymenopteran taxa. One such method is single-locus complementary sex determination, or sl-CSD, in which sex is determined by a single gene locus with many alleles. In species with sl-CSD, diploid individuals that are heterozygous at the sex locus develop as normal females and hemizygous (haploid) individuals as normal males, but diploids homozygous at the sex locus will also develop …

With the description of Brachypsectra vivafosile n. sp., from the Cabo Rojo desert area of Hispaniola, the beetle family Brachypsectridae now contains 4 described species. The family was originally known from the Dominican Republic by Miocene amber fossils of larvae. Genitalia are illustrated for the first time for the family. Relationships of the family within the Elateroidea are briefly discussed.

Being among the most habitat diverse countries in the world (and plant diversity is about 22,000 sp.), Mexico has a Lepidoptera fauna recorded at about 14,385 species but is estimated to be over 22,000 species, if not much higher (some estimates go to 35,000 sp.). High Lepidoptera numbers in Mexico are also due to the large influx of tropical species from the border with Guatemala, as well as Mexican endemics. The parajulid milliped genus Pseudojulus Bollman comprises four species: P. obtectus (Bollman), P. paynei (Hoffman), n. comb., and P. carolinensis and P. coastalis, new species; Arvechambus Causey comprises two species, A. hummi and A. weeinsi, both by Causey. Georgiulus Hoffman is placed in synonymy under Pseudojulus; G. hubrichti Hoffman is placed under P.paynei; and A. australis Causey is placed under A. hummi . The genera are sympatric in north Florida and southern Georgia, but Pseudojulus extends northward to coastal South Carolina and south central North Carolina, and westward to Alabama west of Mobile Bay. The beetle family Cerambycidae is a favorite of many collectors and has been the focus of studies in the southeastern United States. Recent collecting has revealed significant new biological and distribution information for 33 cerambycid species. Included are five new state records and one new country record. Host plants are reported for the first time for 31 species. Unless otherwise stated all collections were made by the author. Rearing was done by collecting infested plant material and placing it in individual clear plastic tubs, which were checked regularly for emerging specimens. Three species of bostrichid beetles, previously unknown from Florida, were found in the Florida State Collection of Arthropods (FSCA) and in the Archbold Biological Station Collection. The genus Stephanopachys Waterhouse, in Florida, is now represented by four species. These new records probably represent infrequently collected species and not new introductions to Florida. A key to all species of Stephanopachys adults from Florida is presented.

Longhorned beetles of the Tribe Lamiini have evolved into approximately 180 genera in South East Asia and nearby regions. Many genera and species are poorly-known and some taxa are still undescribed. As a prelude to a checklist and further studies of this group, the authors propose some taxonomic changes and provide corrections to previous literature.

A recent collecting trip to Andros Island in the Bahamas yielded a number of new Bahamian records for the Laemophloeidae. Unless otherwise stated specimens representing the new records were collected in ultraviolet light traps in a hardwood coppice at Forfar Field Station during the period 2-7-VI-2001 by the author, B. K. Dozier, and R. H. Turnbow, and are deposited in the Florida State Collection of Arthropods. Forfar Field Station is located on the east coast of the north island, near the small town of Stafford Creek.

County records for avian lice are less significant than the host records themselves. Considering that most avian lice are host specific, the county records should resemble the area the host would most likely be encountered. Nonetheless, the list cited in Forrester and Spalding (2003) contains few and spotty county records. The main source of material for this publication has been the Marathon Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Marathon, Monroe Co., Florida. Earlier this year, at the age of 85, Major Jacob Brodzinsky passed away at his home in Santo Domingo. It is with great sadness that I write this obituary, because "Jake" was a great personal friend and professional colleague for over 30 years. He leaves a wife, Marianela (Mañeña) Lopez-Penha, whom he married on April 26,1964, and two lovely daughters, Sibylla and Raquel.

No comprehensive studies have been conducted to assess the insect fauna associated with southern magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora L. Thus, a two-year study was initiated in 2000 to: 1) determine the richness and abundance of insect species associated with southern magnolia in East Tennessee, 2) compare the insect fauna collected from upper and lower tree canopy levels during 2001, 3) compare the insect fauna collected from pitfall traps and malaise traps at two sites, 4) compare the floral insect visitors of southern magnolia, and 5) develop a species database for future studies.

Oak forests dominate the forested landscape of Tennessee. These forests are vital to the economic and environmental health of the state. Northern red oak (NRO) trees, Quercus rubra L., are crucial components of these forests. Information regarding the status of coleopteran diversity associated with NRO is scattered and fragmented within the literature. Poanes hobomok monofacies is described from the southern limits of the Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina, northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee, United States. The type locality is Chestnut Mountain, 3,400’, Macon County, North Carolina, United States. This new subspecies is characterized by the similarity of males and females and overall much darker and subdued marking when compared to both P. h. hobomok (eastern to mid-, northern United States and eastern to mid-, southern Canada) and P. h. wetona (Colorado and New Mexico, United States). The presence of a sex pheromone in (New World Screwworm) females was demonstrated some time ago, but no natural compounds were isolated for proof of activity, and no synthetic compounds were ever tested. We report biological activity as powerful aphrodisiacs for synthetics in declining order of compounds 1, 4, 3, 2 and 5. Two types of bioassays were conducted to compare the stimulatory activity of these compounds against mature virgin males. High carbon dioxide atmospheres combined with high temperature were effective for controlling Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) pupae. Pupae were exposed to atmospheres of 60, 80, or 98% carbon dioxide (CO2) in nitrogen (N2), or 60 or 80% CO2in air at temperatures of 26.7°C or 32.2°C and 60% RH. Controlled atmosphere treatments at 32.2°C controlled pupae faster than the same treatments at the lower temperature. Blissus occiduus Barber has emerged as an important insect pest of buffalograss, Buchloe dactyloides (Nuttall) Engelmann, in Nebraska. This research evaluated selected buffalograss germplasm for resistance to B. occiduus. Eleven buffalograss selections were screened for chinch bug resistance in three greenhouse studies and two field evaluations. Based on chinch bug damage, NE91-118, ‘Tatanka’, ‘Bonnie Brae’, and ‘Cody’ were rated highly to moderately resistant. These four buffalograsses exhibited minimal damage, even though all were heavily infested with chinch bugs. NE84-45-3 and ‘378’ were highly susceptible to B. occiduus. The concentration of photosynthetic pigments (i.e., chlorophylls a and b, and carotenoids) and chlorophyll degradation enzyme (i.e., chlorophyllase, oxidative bleaching, and Mg-dechelatase) activities on aphid-damaged and non-damaged regions of the infested leaves were determined with two infestation periods (6 and 12 days). Russian wheat aphid [Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) (Hemiptera: Aphididae)] feeding caused significant losses of chlorophylls a and b and carotenoids in the damaged regions. However, bird cherry-oat aphid [Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae)] feeding did not, except a significantly lower level of carotenoids was observed in the damaged regions from the short-infestation (6-day) samples.
