Tb19: Parasites Of Potato-Infesting Aphids In Northeastern Maine, W. A. Shands, Geddes W. Simpson, C. F. Muesebeck, H. E. Wave

Technical Bulletins

This publication presents brief synopses of the biology of several of the more common species or genera of primary parasites and of hyperparasites occurring in northeastern Maine. Three approaches are discussed for increasing effectiveness of insect parasites against the potato-infesting species of aphids, including (1) the introduction of new species of parasites or strains of species better adapted and more effective against each species of aphid than the naturally occurring ones, (2) the mass releasing of parasites in potato fields at times critical for the population dynamics of the aphids, and (3) a combination of these. The combined-effort approach is …

Nocturnal Flights Of Triatoma Protracta (Uhler) As Indicated By Collections At Black Light Traps : (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae), Robert D. Sjogren

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An investigation into the environmental and ethological factors relating to summer flights of Triatoma protracta protracta (Uhler) was performed utilizing black light traps of original design. Field observations were conducted on 51 evenings during the period June 1 to October 31, 1964. The traps were operated on a surveillance basis for the remainder of a twelve month period.

A total of 398 adult Triatoma protracta were collected in traps around a residence located in the chaparral covered foothills 10 miles east of Redlands, California. In addition to observations on field behavior, laboratory dissections were performed on each bug to obtain …

Appraisal For Combined Pea Aphid And Spotted Alfalfa Aphid Resistance In Alfalfa, W. L. Howe, W. R. Kehr, C. O. Calkins Feb 1965

Appraisal For Combined Pea Aphid And Spotted Alfalfa Aphid Resistance In Alfalfa, W. L. Howe, W. R. Kehr, C. O. Calkins

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Sources of combined resistance to spotted alfalfa and pea aphids were found in Ranger alfalfa and its parental strains, foreign plant introductions, clones and their progenies. Ranger alfalfa appeared to be a good source for selection of plants with resistance to both aphids.

Dual Low Dosage Applications Of Heptachlor For Control Of The Imported Fire Ant, C. S. Lofgren, C. E. Stringer, Jr., F. J. Bartlett, W. A. Banks, W. F. Barthel Jan 1965

Dual Low Dosage Applications Of Heptachlor For Control Of The Imported Fire Ant, C. S. Lofgren, C. E. Stringer, Jr., F. J. Bartlett, W. A. Banks, W. F. Barthel

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Control of the imported fire ant, Solenopsis saevissima richteri (Forel), with two applications of heptachlor at dosages of 1/4 or 1/2 pound per acre applied at intervals of 3 or 6 months was reported by Lofgren et al. (1961). Murphy et al. (1962) reported that soil residue following two successive 1/4 pound per acre treatments of heptachlor is equivalent after 10 months to the residue following a single 1 pound per acre treatment.

Control Of Prodenia Litura On Cotton In The North Of Western Australia, P N. Forte, D. G. Shedley

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

COTTON is subject to considerable insect attack at the new Ord River irrigation area in the East Kimberleys of Western Australia.

Although a long list of insects have been recorded as damaging cotton in this area there are two which have proved so far to present the biggest problem.

These are Heliothis punctigera and Prodenia litura.

Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds Documents

This article, which was published in volume 39 issue 4 of the journal Northwest Science, describes a study that began in the fall of 1959 and was supported by federal grant G-8779. Dr. Jane Claire Dirks-Edmunds's research focused on the little-known Bronze Beetle and involved several of her contemporaries, both within and outside the Linfield College Biology Department.

Northerly Movement Of Corn Borer Moths In Southern Minnesota, H. C. Chiang, Vern Sisson, M. A. Ewert Jan 1965

Northerly Movement Of Corn Borer Moths In Southern Minnesota, H. C. Chiang, Vern Sisson, M. A. Ewert

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Seventeen light traps were installed in 6 counties in southwest Minnesota in 1962 and 1963 and the nightly catches of moths of the European corn borer were recorded. The results show that moth catch was higher during nights with south winds and the nights immediately following such nights. This relation occurred over a large area and during the entire flight period. Moth popu1'otion in southern Minnesota was increased when south winds prevailed during the Right period. The trapping and recording were carried out by 15 FFA members, l 4-H member, and l adult farmer. The project demonstrates that these young …

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Minnesota Leucorrhinia species are contrasted with one another through the use of male and female characters . Included in the key lo species are two species (frigida and glacialis) not previously reported from Minnesota. All North American species are discussed.

A Review Of Characters Used In The Identification Of North Central States' Sitona Germar (Coleoptera, Curculionidae)., Valerie J. Fridrich

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Lack of good literature concerning taxonomy of the genus Sitona has prompted this study. Specific characters, such as, color, prothorax shape, frontal groove, punctures, genitalia, setae, eyes, length, elytral shape, and scales are discussed. A key for the five species of the North Centro I Stales is presented, including notes on each species.

The Black Beetle, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins Jan 1965

The Black Beetle, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Since first reported in Western Australia 27 years ago, the black beetle has spread widely to become a well-known pest in metropolitan home lawns and public grassed areas.

THE black beetle (Heteronychus sanctae-helenae Blanchard) is a native of South Africa which seems to have first gained a footing in Australia in about 1930, for it was then recorded as a pest of maize in New South Wales. (Gurney 1934).

Preliminary Report On Selection And Breeding Of Honeybees For Alfalfa Pollen Collection, William P. Nye, O. Mackensen Jan 1965

Preliminary Report On Selection And Breeding Of Honeybees For Alfalfa Pollen Collection, William P. Nye, O. Mackensen

All PIRU Publications

Some colonies of honeybees on alfalfa collect a much higher percentage of alfalfa pollen than others. The possibility of genetic differences between colonies was investigated. Colonies collecting high and low percentages of alfalfa pollen were first selected. Daughters of queens from three 'high' and three 'low' colonies were inseminated from their brothers, and colonies headed by queens of these six lines were tested. Colonies headed by sister queens were more similar in the proportion of alfalfa pollen they collected than were those headed by unrelated queens. This suggests heritability of the factor studied. On the other hand no correlation was …

It was distributed on nursery stock to most parts of the world in the early days of horticulture.
