Enhancing Assessments Of Blue Carbon Stocks In Marsh Soils Using Bayesian Mixed-Effects Modeling With Spatial Autocorrelation — Proof Of Concept Using Proxy Data, Grace S. Chiu, Molly Mitchell, Julie Herman, Christian Longo, Kate Davis

VIMS Articles

Our paper showcases the potential gain in scientific insights about blue carbon stocks (or total organic carbon) when additional rigor, in the form of a spatial autocorrelation component, is formally incorporated into the statistical model for assessing the variability in carbon stocks. Organic carbon stored in marsh soils, or blue carbon (BC), is important for sequestering carbon from the atmosphere. The potential for marshes to store carbon dioxide, mitigating anthropogenic contributions to the atmosphere, makes them a critical conservation target, but efforts have been hampered by the current lack of robust methods for assessing the variability of BC stocks at …

Kepone In The James River Estuary: Past, Current And Future Trends, Michael A. Unger, George G. Vadas Apr 2017

Kepone In The James River Estuary: Past, Current And Future Trends, Michael A. Unger, George G. Vadas

Reports

In late 1975, a manufacturing facility in Hopewell, VA had not only exposed workers to the chlorinated pesticide, Kepone, but had also severely contaminated the James River estuary. To assess the potential risk to the public, Virginia initiated a finfish-monitoring program in late 1975. Over the next 40 years over 13,000 samples were collected from the James River and Chesapeake Bay and analyzed for Kepone. Kepone production was eventually banned worldwide. The average Kepone concentrations found in most species began falling when the production of Kepone ended, but the averages remained over the action limit of 0.3 mgkg-1 until …

Associated Dataset: Climate Change Impacts On Southern Ross Sea Phytoplankton Composition, Productivity And Export, Daniel E. Kaufman, Marjorie A.M. Friedrichs, Walker O. Smith Jr., Eileen E. Hofmann, Michael S. Dinniman, John C.P. Hemmings Jan 2017

Associated Dataset: Climate Change Impacts On Southern Ross Sea Phytoplankton Composition, Productivity And Export, Daniel E. Kaufman, Marjorie A.M. Friedrichs, Walker O. Smith Jr., Eileen E. Hofmann, Michael S. Dinniman, John C.P. Hemmings

Data

This dataset includes data used in the publication Kaufman et al., 2017, JGR-Oceans, which investigates how these climatic changes in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, may alter phytoplankton composition, primary productivity and export. A one-dimensional version of the Model of Ecosystem Dynamics, nutrient Utilisation, Sequestration and Acidification was adapted for use in the Ross Sea (MEDUSA-RS). Glider measurements were used to force MEDUSA-RS, which includes diatoms and both solitary and colonial forms of Phaeocystis antarctica. Model performance was evaluated with glider observations, and experiments were conducted using projections of physical drivers for mid- and late-21st century. Additional scenarios examined the …

Sea-Level Rise & Virginia's Coastal Wetlands, Center For Coastal Resources Management, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science

Reports

Rivers & Coast is a periodic publication of the Center for Coastal Resources Management, Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The goal of Rivers & Coast is to keep readers well informed of current scientific understanding behind key environmental issues related to watershed rivers and coastal ecosystems of the Chesapeake Bay.

Present And Historical Environmental Survey Of The Poquoson River, York County, Virginia And The Warwick River; Newport News, Virginia : With Special Reference To Biotic Communities And The Effects Of Alum Discharge, Robert J. Diaz, Morris H. Roberts Jr., Gene M. Silberhorn, Gary F. Anderson May 1985

Anderson

Reports

The objectives of this study were:

1. to determine the areal extent of discharged materials within each of the rivers using the aluminum:silicon ratio as an indicator;

2. to evaluate the benthic invertebrate communities within each of the rivers;

3. to determine whether there are differences in the productivity of the benthic algal and planktonic communities which can be attributed to the discharge of alum sludge in each river;

4. to evaluate the condition of the marsh communities in each river near the filtration plant;

5. to review historical biological data for the Poquoson and Warwick Rivers and to relate …
