Direct And Indirect Controls On Bee Community Composition, Caroline Marie Devan May 2018

Direct And Indirect Controls On Bee Community Composition, Caroline Marie Devan

Dissertations

Bees are important pollinators, critical for the continued survival of plants in both natural and agricultural ecosystems. Diverse bee communities have been shown to increase richness in plant communities and plant reproduction depends upon bee community richness. Yet there is growing concern that pollinators, especially bees, are declining globally. This dissertation focuses on evaluating the mechanisms responsible for bee community composition in order to promote bee conservation in natural systems and their restoration in human-dominated urban and agricultural landscapes.

Bee populations are impacted directly by three things: floral resources, nesting resources and risk, primarily from natural enemies. Bees are indirectly …

Does Soil Moisture Availability Explain Liana Seedling Distribution Across A Tropical Rainfall Gradient?, Eric Manzane-Pinzon, Guillermo Goldstein, Stefan A. Schnitzer Mar 2018

Does Soil Moisture Availability Explain Liana Seedling Distribution Across A Tropical Rainfall Gradient?, Eric Manzane-Pinzon, Guillermo Goldstein, Stefan A. Schnitzer

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Liana density tends to increase with decreasing rainfall and increasing seasonality. However, the pattern of liana distribution may be due to differences in soil water retention capacity, not rainfall and seasonality per se. We tested the effect of rainfall and soil substrate with respect to the distribution of liana seedlings in six sites across a rainfall gradient from the wet Atlantic to the dry Pacific in central Panama. Soils were either limestone, with low water-holding capacity, or laterite, with higher water-holding capacity. We sampled liana seedlings at each site using three 1 × 100 m transect. We found that …

A Review Of The Serica (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) Of Mexico, Canada, And The Western United States, Reese John Worthington Jan 2018

A Review Of The Serica (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) Of Mexico, Canada, And The Western United States, Reese John Worthington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Twenty-two species and subspecies of Serica occur in Mexico. Serica ensenada Saylor, 1948 is recognized as a junior synonym of Serica pilifera Horn, 1894. Two new species, Serica ascia Lago & Worthington and Serica fenestra Lago & Worthington are described from Mexico. Three genera of Sericini are recorded from Canada, Maladera castanea (Arrow), Nipponoserica peregrina (Chapin), and twelve species of Serica. Seventy-seven species and subspecies of Serica occur in the contiguous United States west of the 100th meridian. Eleven new species, Serica berriani Lago & Worthington, Serica cuneiverpa Lago & Worthington, Serica desolaterra Lago & Worthington, Serica katelinae Lago & …
