Cytogenetics Of Delphinium (Ranunculaceae) Species Native To Oregon, Jill Yeatman Turner Nov 1992

Cytogenetics Of Delphinium (Ranunculaceae) Species Native To Oregon, Jill Yeatman Turner

Dissertations and Theses

Evidence of hybridization, known to occur in the genus Delphinium (Ranunculaceae ), has recently been discovered among certain Delphinium species native to Oregon. This issue was investigated by cytogenetic analysis of four native species of Oregon, D. trolliifolium, D. menziesii, D. pavonaceum and D. leucophaeum, and an unidentified purple delphinium, which is possibly a hybrid. Although many species in this genus are karyotypically similar, any variations found among the karyotypes of these Oregon species might be used to identify parental chromosomes in the purple delphinium (proposed hybrid). Meiotic analysis was used to detect structurally heterozygous homologues that …

Retention Of Cellular Viability And Growth Potential In Cryopreserved Bovine Arterial Tissue: Implications For Clinical Use Of Cryopreserved Vascular Allografts, Kip G. Gardner Oct 1992

Retention Of Cellular Viability And Growth Potential In Cryopreserved Bovine Arterial Tissue: Implications For Clinical Use Of Cryopreserved Vascular Allografts, Kip G. Gardner

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Segments of bovine calf aortas and pulmonary arteries were cryopreserved at -196° C for two weeks to 18 months and subsequently thawed. Cellular morphology, viability, and growth potential in these segments were then compared with the same attributes in segments from fresh (control) arteries. Scanning electron microscopy revealed no disruption of intimal surfaces attributable to cryopreservation. Endothelial cells were successfully cultured from all cryopreserved arterial segments. Endothelial monolayers grown from cryopreserved arteries had a cobblestone appearance and expressed Factor VIII antigen but not smooth muscle alpha-actin. Plating efficiency in primary cultures of endothelial cells was lower for cryopreserved arteries than …

Development Of A Semi-Synthetic Medium Supporting Adherent Growth In Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci, Abbas Sadeghi Aug 1992

Development Of A Semi-Synthetic Medium Supporting Adherent Growth In Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci, Abbas Sadeghi

Dissertations and Theses

A semi-synthetic medium for use in determining adherent growth with Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus saprophyticus was developed. Production of an adherent biofilm was dependent upon the presence of hematin in the growth medium. Clinical strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis were tested for production of an adherent biofilm in trypticase soy broth, the semi-synthetic medium and the hyperalimentary nutrient solution used in the neonatal hospital unit. An adherent biofilm was obtained when Staphylococcus epidermidis was cultured m hematin supplemented hyperalimentary solution. Growth in the hyperalimentary nutrient solution diluted with fetal calf serum showed the same growth rate as when the nutrient solution …

Habitat, Diurnal, And Tidal Effects On The Behavior Of Glaucous- Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens), Dean Pearson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of habitat, time of day and tide on the behavior of Glaucous-winged gulls nesting on Protection Island, Jefferson County, Washington. During the period of March - June, 1991, more gulls were present in the colony and their rates of behavior were greater during the morning and evening hours than during midday.

Though gull numbers and their rates of behavior in the colony tended to increase with tidal cycle, a plateau in these numbers and rates consistently occurred between +0.3m to +1.2m above mean tide.

More intrusion and courtship-related activity occurred …

The Functional Role Of Peripheral Nerves In Ige-Mediated Inflammation, Gary Wright Miller Jul 1992

The Functional Role Of Peripheral Nerves In Ige-Mediated Inflammation, Gary Wright Miller

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

IgE-mediated inflammation was measured in mouse footpads with and without sciatic innervation. Mice were passively sensitized with IgE anti-dinitrophenol, a monoclonal antibody. Antigen-induced swelling was reduced by 26% by sciatic nerve transection. Whether transection occurred 10 days prior or immediately prior to antigen challenge did not affect the swelling response. The full inflammatory response was restored by antidromic stimulation of the distal portion of the cut nerve, but only in the freshly cut nerve. Antigen-induced swelling was unaffected by rhizotomy or spinal nerve transection. Pre-treatment with capsaicin reduced the swelling to a level similar to sciatic nerve transection. Treatment with …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Extracts of the herbs Oldenlandia diffusa (OD) and Scutellaria barbata (SB) have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating liver, lung and rectal tumors while extracts of Astragalus membranaceus (AM) and Ligustrum lucidum (LL) are often used as adjuncts in cancer therapy. In this study, we determined the effects of aqueous extracts of these four herbs on aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), benzo[a]pyrene 7,8-dihydrodiol (BaP 7,8-DHD) and benzo[a]pyrene 7,8-dihydrodiol-9,10-epoxide (BPDE)-induced mutagenesis, mediated by enzymes in rat hepatic 9000 x g supernatant (S9), in Salmonella typhimurium TA100. We also studied the effects of these four herbs on …

Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials In Anuran Amphibians, Marc Brandon Carey May 1992

Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials In Anuran Amphibians, Marc Brandon Carey

Dissertations and Theses

In this study, I looked at the effects of sound level, temperature and dehydration/hypernatremia on the brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) of four species of anuran amphibians (Rana pipiens, Rana catesbeiana, Bufo americanus and Bufo terrestris). The BAEP was used because it allowed me to monitor both the peripheral and central aspects of auditory nervous function simultaneously and over a long period of time.

Circulating Antibodies To Thymic Antigens In Autism And Alzheimer's Disease, Chih-Li Chen May 1992

Circulating Antibodies To Thymic Antigens In Autism And Alzheimer's Disease, Chih-Li Chen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Abnormal T lymphocyte reactions in both autism and Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been reported. This research investigated the possibility that these abnormalities may involve circulating antithymic antibodies. Plasma samples from autistic patients, AD patients, and normal-matched controls were tested for reactivity against murine thymocytes.

In the first of 3 studies results of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were statistically significant for binding (P < 0.001) between antithymic antibodies in plasmas of AD patients and murine thymocytes. Binding (P < 0.05) in low dilutions (1/2.5 and 1/5} of autistic patient plasmas was also observed. In the second study, plasmas of neither autistic nor AD patients significantly inhibited DNA synthesis of thymic cells in the presence of interleukin-1 (IL-l} and phytohemagglutinin (PHA). In the third study, no significant increases (P > 0.05) in cytotoxic activities were detected using AD patient plasmas and both untreated and heat-treated autistic patient plasmas. After further testing, these heat-treated plasmas diluted 1/64 and 1/128 had increased cytotoxicities (P < 0.05) when rabbit complement was added, an indication that cytotoxicity of antithymic antibodies is complement dependent.

Therefore, circulating antithymic antibodies may …

Augmentation Of Natural Populations Of Entomophagous Insects Through The Use Of Secondary Food Sources, John Swallow May 1992

Augmentation Of Natural Populations Of Entomophagous Insects Through The Use Of Secondary Food Sources, John Swallow

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Local densities of predators, including ladybeetles, parasitoids, big-eyed bugs, and minute pirate bugs, increased with the application of artificial honeydew, consisted of sugar and wheast dissolved in water. Sugar, rather than wheast, was the active ingredient causing predators to aggregate, although wheast prolonged the effect of the sugar treatment for the ladybeetles. Furthermore, the artificial honeydew treatments had a marked effect for a period of one week. These results suggest a potentially important role of the use of synthetic honeydew as a means of pest control in an Integrated Pest Management system.

Three Dimensional Mammalian Skull Morphology, Suzanne Louise Krippaehne

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis deals with archiving morphological data utilizing a three dimensional coordinate system. Morphological reference points are archived via rectangular position coordinates, rectangular position vectors, and spherical position vectors. The concepts of translation trajectories, translation vectors, and relative position vectors are developed. Analysis of three dimensional coordinate data utilizing translation trajectories and translation vectors is described. In order to test the methodology developed, the method is applied to an analysis of harbor porpoise, Phocoena phocoena L., skull morphology. (Key words: morphology, ontogenetic trajectories, allometry, position coordinates, position vectors, translation trajectories, translation vectors, relative position vectors, and harbor porpoise).

Development Of Mass-Rearing Techniques For Aphelinus Asychis Walker For Use In A Biological Control Program Against Russian Wheat Aphid, Robin Lynn Whitaker-Deerberg Mar 1992

Development Of Mass-Rearing Techniques For Aphelinus Asychis Walker For Use In A Biological Control Program Against Russian Wheat Aphid, Robin Lynn Whitaker-Deerberg

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Mass-rearing techniques were developed for the parasitoid Aphelinus asychis Walker (Hymenoptera:Aphelinidae) for use in a biological control program against the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko) (Homoptera:Aphididae). Daily ovipositional activity, host-feeding behavior, effects of population density in the rearing cages and effects of cold storage on mummies were determined.

Daily ovipositional activity peaked at day 5 after emergence of the parasitoid. Ninety-two percent of mummies resulting from ovipositional activity were oviposited the first 13 days of the parasitoid’s life. Since mummification occurred 11 days after oviposition and emergence occurred 11 days after mummification, day 24 was determined to be the …

Localization Of A Collagenous Protein In The Organic Matrix Of Spicules From The Octocoral Leptogorgia Virgulata (Cnidaria: Gorgonacea), Jeffrey L. Dupree Jan 1992

Localization Of A Collagenous Protein In The Organic Matrix Of Spicules From The Octocoral Leptogorgia Virgulata (Cnidaria: Gorgonacea), Jeffrey L. Dupree

Master's Theses

Calcareous body inclusions are commonly found throughout the invertebrate taxa. Elaborately structured calcium carbonate spicules are the major mineralized body inclusions of the gorgonian, Leptogorgia virgulata. Spicule formation in this octocoral, as well as other calcium carbonate invertebrate structures, is apparently regulated by the intra-spicule organic matrix. Recent findings show that the insoluble fraction of the spicule organic matrix is collagenous. Collagen, although integral to calcium phosphate structures found in vertebrates is not usually associated with the formation of invertebrate calcium carbonate structures. Interestingly, collagen is present in the organic matrix during the summer but absent in winter. This suggests …

Aspects Of Air Pollution, And Its Effect On The Respiratory System, Jennifer Randall Jan 1992

Aspects Of Air Pollution, And Its Effect On The Respiratory System, Jennifer Randall

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

This report centers around one of today's most prominent environmental issues-- air pollution. First, the major pollutants are defined and explained. Chloroflourocarbons, ozone, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and suspended particulate matter all receive attention.

Next, air pollution's effect on the Earth is explained. The "greenhouse effect", global warming, acid rain, and ozone depletion all have an enormous impact on Earth's climate and atmosphere.

The report proceeds on to discuss options for controlling and so lving the air pollution problem. Se+ective catalytic reduction, noncatalytic reduction, tradeable permits-- these three processes are examples of large scale attempts …

The Morphology, Physiology, And Fine Structure Of A Toluene-Oxidizing Strain Of Pseudomonas Putida, Barry Clayton Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

The role of microorganisms in the degradation of xenobiotics in the environment is well established. Bacteria from the genus Pseudomonas are particularly well adapted to the degradation of hydrocarbons, aromatics, and numerous other natural and introduced substrates. We have isolated a strain of Pseudomonas putida, designated PC2P15, that uses toluene, phenol, benzene, and a number of other substrates as its sole sources of carbon and energy.
