Prospecting For And Isolation Of Microalgae In South Texas, Mauricio Alejandro Peña

Theses and Dissertations

Microalgae is a very important microorganism that can be used for beneficial purposes for humans. One way to show the importance of algae in this planet is the contribution of Oxygen it provides to the atmosphere, which many organisms rely on (Medeiros et al., 2015). Carbon footprint has been one of the greatest causes for global warming and it is due to the use of fossils to create diesel. One of the ways to avoid contamination is to replace those fuels that are used on daily basis, such as for transportation. The microalgae are able to produce lipids that can …

Lipid Analysis, Fluorescence Microscopy And Flow Cytometry As Tools To Evaluate Microalgae For Potential Biofuel Production, Giovanina Aimee Hinojosa May 2020

Lipid Analysis, Fluorescence Microscopy And Flow Cytometry As Tools To Evaluate Microalgae For Potential Biofuel Production, Giovanina Aimee Hinojosa

Theses and Dissertations

Petroleum-based crude oil is nonrenewable and toxic to the environment, leading to a need for a more efficient and environmentally effective replacement. Microalgae produce lipids which can be converted to recyclable biofuels; therefore, research in lipid production by algae is becoming important for an economic and environmental sustainability. Microalgae can re-absorb atmospheric CO2 and have rapid growth, thereby lowering greenhouse gasses (GHGs) emission, renewability, and simple growth requirements.

Nannochloris sp. is a marine microalga that is amenable for lipid production because there is little research on it so this study will focus on using flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy and other …

Nannochloris Sp. And Oocystis Sp. Algae Exposed To Osmotic Stress For Increased Lipid Production For Use In Biofuels, Laura M. Chavez Aug 2018

Nannochloris Sp. And Oocystis Sp. Algae Exposed To Osmotic Stress For Increased Lipid Production For Use In Biofuels, Laura M. Chavez

Theses and Dissertations

Algal biofuel research is important due to the potential need for replacement of non-renewable fossil fuels and a changing global climate. Under stress, algal cells tend to increase neutral lipid production, which are a suitable source for biofuels. The goal of this study was to subject Nannochloris sp.. and Oocystis sp. algal cells to osmotic stress by modifying sucrose and salinity levels in different treatment medias.

The treatment containing the lowest salinity (15 ppt) and no sucrose yielded the highest lipid fluorescence/cell in Nannochloris sp.. cells (0.00142 ± 0.00044) on day 2 while the treatment containing highest salinity (35ppt) …
