Concussions, or mild traumatic brain injuries, do not have a universally accepted definition but there are key features that the experts agree upon; most notably that they are caused by a direct blow, they cause functional disturbances, and that they cannot be explained by another injury or impairment. Most concussions are resolved within a few days but 10-20% have lingering effects that can last for years.
