Scents Of Place: Exploring Self, Place And Planet Through Botanical Fragrance, Jennifer L. Kitson, Donna M. Sweigart
Open Educational Resources
This learning module provides instructors with an experiential field guide for introducing students to the United Nations Inner Development Goals Framework through self-guided mindful smelling activities and reflection prompts related to botanical fragrance. The interdisciplinary nature of this module allows for use or adaptation in a wide range of courses looking for outdoor, place-based and self-guided experiential learning to explore the role of botanical fragrance for people, plants and pollinators. The overarching goal is to deepen students’ connections to their senses (and scents) of self, place and planet through exploring botanical fragrance with mindful smelling. The learning activities in this …

UNLV Best Teaching Practices Expo
Reading scientific literature is a critical science competency that proves difficult to “teach.” Students enter our classes with varying science vocabularies, and many suffer imposter syndrome when reading technical reports because they do not yet identify as capable scientists. The “Science Literacy” assignment guides students to develop and expand strategies to read science articles. Over the semester, students read 5 to 6 articles ranging from peer-reviewed manuscripts to popular science magazines to science blogs about sequencing Ozzy Osbourne's DNA. In Canvas Discussion boards, they a guiding set of questions and then respond to their peers. This assignment is a low-stakes …

Biology Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Coronavirus Infectious Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been one of the most dreaded, recent pandemics impacting multifarious global sectors, including education. To control contagion, affected nations ordered academic campus closures and home-schooling plans. Schools, colleges, and universities underwent a paradigm shift adopting internet-based delivery of lectures, synchronously or asynchronously (recorded), with virtual labs. Medical education suffered significantly; suspending student internships in hospitals decreased practical exposure to clinical specialties, impairing students’ performance, and competency.Teachers of traditional classes, with technical assistance, undertook rigorous trainings to restructure pedagogical and assessment strategies online using web/mobile applications and other digital tools.

Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase
Biology is unique from other science disciplines in that concepts taught in core classes can inform our student’s understanding of sex and gender. A biology major encounters lessons on sex determination, sexual reproduction, and sex characteristics in their courses. The language used in these units matters. It is imperative that educators consider how the language, examples, and content that we use in classrooms drive (or not) inclusivity for gender- and sexuality-diverse (GSD) (aka LGBTQ+) individuals. We chose to analyze four college-level human anatomy/physiology (AP) textbooks for GSD population inclusivity. We adopted a queer theory framework to critically examine how sex, …

Inauguration of Eric R. Jensen
April 2, 2016; 10–10:30 am
How do I support students pursuing their own unique professional goals using my discipline as a backdrop? This, for me, is the defining question for mentorship at a liberal arts institution. Three students and I will consider how collaboration in one discipline, microbiology, can shape a variety of professional trajectories.
Presenters: Loralyn Cozy, Assistant Professor of Biology
Rachel Ende ’16, Biology major
Student Respondents: Megan Smeets ’17, Biology & Psychology double major
Christina Khouri ’16, Biology & Hispanic Studies double major

Protein Folding & Structure Prediction Posters
Initially, drugs were discovered by either chance or by trial and error through screening methods. Because scientists did not have the ability to model protein structures, drug discovery was a very expensive process. Currently, researchers are working on technologies to determine protein ligands and potential drugs through the usage of predicted protein structures.

Protein Folding & Structure Prediction Posters
When proteins form polypeptide chains, they form primary structure - their amino acid sequence - secondary structure - their local shapes - and tertiary structure - their global fold and shape. Tertiary structure and its prediction are of vital importance to the biology community because of its importance for manipulating gene expression, cell-wide processes, and more. Because of the innumerable possibilities for even a simple primary structure protein, prediction is incredibly difficult. As bioinformatics technologies advance, though, our understanding of tertiary folding advances.
