A Common Belief among Pre-Medical and Medical Students is that Biochemistry is Not Relevant to Practicing Medicine. the Problem-Based Approach of Case Studies Has Been Used in Medical Education to Scaffold the Application of Content to Clinical Cases, But Few Studies Report on a Similar Use in Undergraduate Biochemistry. Case Studies in Biochemistry and Related Disciplines Have Been Previously Reported as Increasing Learning Motivation and Supporting Depth of Knowledge. Additionally, Students Engaging in Case Studies Outperform Students in Traditional Instruction. the Objective of This Qualitative Case Study Was to Find How the Timing of a Medical Case Study within the …

Student Preclass Preparation By Both Reading The Textbook And Watching Videos Online Improves Exam Performance In A Partially Flipped Course, Kaleb Bassett, Gayla R. Olbricht, Katie Shannon Sep 2020

The flipped classroom has the potential to improve student performance. Because flipping involves both preclass preparation and problem solving in the classroom, the means by which increased learning occurs and whether the method of delivering content matters is of interest. In a partially flipped cell biology course, students were assigned online videos before the flipped class and textbook reading before lectures. Low-stakes assessments were used to incentivize both types of preclass preparation. We hypothesized that more students would watch the videos than read the textbook and that both types of preparation would positively affect exam performance. A multiple linear regression …

Exposing K-12 students to cutting edge science that impacts their daily lives can bring classroom lessons to life. Citizen-science projects are an excellent way to bring high-level science to the classroom and help satisfy one of the cornerstone concepts of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), "engaging in practices that scientists and engineers actually use." This can be a daunting task for teachers who may lack the background or resources to integrate these projects into the classroom. This is where scientific societies such as the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) can play a critical role. ASM encourages its members to …
