In this teaching module, students will learn about NCBI GenBank, search for DNA/protein sequences from multiple plant species of a gene that encodes Rubisco enzyme, construct and interpret a phylogenetic tree, and discuss traits that allowed plants to adapt their life on land.

In this research, we propose a novel concept for a non-destructive evaluation of volatiles emitted from ripening grapes using solid-phase microextraction (SPME). This concept is novel to both the traditional vinifera grapes and the cold-hardy cultivars. Our sample models are cold-hardy varieties in the upper Midwest for which many of the basic multiyear grape flavor and wine style data is needed. Non-destructive sampling included a use of polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) chambers temporarily enclosing and concentrating volatiles emitted by a whole cluster of grapes on a vine and a modified 2 mL glass vial for a vacuum-assisted sampling of volatiles from …

Therapeutic antibodies are achieving new levels of therapeutic success in treating cancers and immunological disorders by antibody engagement of Fc receptor-directed immune responses. Conversely, inhibiting autoantibody induced Fc receptor activation is an attractive approach to treat autoimmune diseases. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies are often the principal subclass used in therapeutic antibodies and associated with autoimmune pathologies because of their long circulation and potent effector functions, including activation of the Fcγ Receptor (FcγR). Transgene flows into wild/weedy relatives may cause ecological and economic problems. Seed dormancy is an adaptive trait that distributes germination over time and promotes persistence of weeds in agroecosystems. Silencing natural genes controlling seed dormancy (SD) could promote germination and reduce weed adaptability. Plants have evolved a complex defense system against pests and pathogens utilizing many types of receptors, signaling factors, and defense compounds to detect pathogen presence and respond effectively. Since many pathogens have evolved immunesuppressing effectors used to reduce plant resistance, plants have evolved a family of receptors that detect pathogenic effectors as a result of an evolutionary arms race. These receptors contain Nucleotide-Binding Site and Leucine-Rich Repeat domains and are called NBS-LRR or NLR proteins. Cancer is second only to cardiovascular illnesses as the deadliest human disease globally. Currently, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and triple negative breast carcinoma (TNBC) are the most frequent types of cancer and have the highest mortalities. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a central regulator of tumor progression, is frequently overexpressed in both cancers and is a key clinical target for therapeutic intervention. Multidrug resistance protein 1 (MRP1/ABCC1) actively transports a variety of drugs, toxic molecules and important physiological substrates across the plasma membrane. It can confer broad-spectrum drug resistance and can decrease the bioavailability of many important drugs such as anti-cancer agents, antibiotics, antivirals, antidepressants and antiinflammatory drugs. Calcein-AM, a fluorescent reporter commonly used for studying compound interactions with MRP1 was recently used in the development of a high content imaging-based assay by our group. This assay was robust and had better sensitivity than fluorescent plate readouts. The assay identified 12 MRP1 inhibitors after screening an anticancer library of 386 compounds. Due …
