Evaluation Of Feeding Alternative Feedstuffs Including Hydroponic Barley Sprouts And Carinata Meal To Dairy Cattle, Rhea D. Lawrence

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation research was to examine alternative feed ingredients not typically found in dairy cattle diets. In total, four studies were conducted to evaluate feedstuffs such as hydroponic barley sprouts and carinata meal and how they affect cattle performance. To determine how feeding hydroponic barley sprouts would affect growing dairy heifer and lactating cow performance two feeding studies were conducted. In the first study, inclusion of 14 % (DM basis) hydroponic barley sprouts (HYD) was evaluated in an ad libitum total mixed ration (TMR) compared to a control (CON) diet on dairy heifer performance during a 12 …

Reducing Methane Production With Corn Oil And Calcium Sulfate: Responses On Whole-Animal Energy And Nitrogen Balance In Dairy Cattle, J. V. Judy, G. C. Bachman, T. M. Brown-Brandl, S. C. Fernando, K. E. Hales, P. S. Miller, R. R. Stowell, P. J. Kononoff Jan 2019

The addition of fat and calcium sulfate to diets fed to ruminants has resulted in a reduction in methane production, but the effects on energy balance have not been studied. A study using indirect calorimetry and 16 multiparous (8 Holstein and 8 Jersey; 78 ± 15 d in milk; mean ± standard deviation) lactating dairy cows was conducted to determine how mitigating methane production by adding corn oil or calcium sulfate to diets containing reduced-fat distillers grains affects energy and nitrogen balance. A replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 35-d periods (28 d of adaption and 4 d …

Use Of Indirect Calorimetry To Evaluate Utilization Of Energy In Lactating Jersey Dairy Cattle Consuming Common Coproducts, M. A. Reynolds, T. M. Brown-Brandl, J. V. Judy, K. J. Herrick, K. E. Hales, A. K. Watson, Paul J. Kononoff Jan 2019

The use of coproducts as an alternative feed source is a common practice when formulating dairy rations. A study using 12 multiparous (79 ± 16 d in milk; mean ± standard deviation) lactating Jersey cows was conducted over 5 mo to evaluate the effects of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) or canola meal on milk and gas production. A replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design was used to compare 4 dietary treatments. Treatments comprised a control (CON) containing no coproducts, a treatment diet containing 10% (dry matter basis) lowfat DDGS (LFDG), a treatment diet containing 10% high-fat DDGS …

Disease Prevalence And Its Consequences On Blood Metabolites, Physical Activities, Milk Yield, And Fertility, J. S. Stevenson, S. Banuelos Jan 2019

Disease Prevalence And Its Consequences On Blood Metabolites, Physical Activities, Milk Yield, And Fertility, J. S. Stevenson, S. Banuelos

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Health status of 160 lactating cows was monitored by assessing blood metabolites on days 0, 3, 7, and 14 after calving, in addition measures of physical activity during 20 days surrounding parturition. Cows with clinical disease (any with diagnosis of ketosis, metritis, mastitis, respiratory disease, or milk fever during the first 60 days in milk) were compared with outcomes in healthy cows. Expected differences were observed between health status groups for serum concentrations of free fatty acids, beta-hydroxybutyrate, haptoglobin, and calcium, but not for plasma glucose. Daily postpartum rumination and eating times were decreased in diseased cows and they spent …

Negative Effects Of Occurrence Of Clinical Mastitis From Calving To End Of The Voluntary Waiting Period On Reproduction In Holstein Cows, Seçki̇n Salar, Oğuz Çalişici, Duygu Çalişici, Doğukan Özen, Ayhan Baştan Jan 2019

Negative Effects Of Occurrence Of Clinical Mastitis From Calving To End Of The Voluntary Waiting Period On Reproduction In Holstein Cows, Seçki̇n Salar, Oğuz Çalişici, Duygu Çalişici, Doğukan Özen, Ayhan Baştan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective was to evaluate the effects of clinical mastitis (CM) on reproductive performance in high-milk?producing cows before the service period. The data of Holstein Friesian cows (n = 550) in a commercial farm was retrospectively evaluated. The diagnosis of CM was made by the presence of visible abnormalities in milk or symptoms of inflammation of one or more of the quarters. Cows were checked to detect CM prior to each milking. Calving to first service interval (CFSI), calving to conception interval (CCI), and services per conception (SC) were evaluated as reproductive parameters. Calving to first service interval (83.68 ± …
