Distribution Of Vertebrates Of The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Stanley H. Anderson, Wayne A. Hubert, Craig Patterson, Alan J. Redder, David Duvall
Great Basin Naturalist
During a survey of the vertebrates in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, 46 mammal, 210 bird, 9 reptile, 5 amphibian, and 28 fish species were found. Habitat structure and moisture were two environmental variables associated with species numbers across this 1,820-ha area. Eight distinct habitats were evaluated. In coniferous forests, 27% of the birds and 54% of the mammals were observed. Sagebrush/grasslands and upland shrublands were very arid and had relatively few vertebrates. Five introduced game birds occurred in sagebrush habitat. Riparian and wetland habitats had the largest number of unique vertebrates, 38 and 77 respectively. The establishment of …

Dust Elimination From Outdoor Feedlots For Sheep, D J. Carter
Dust Elimination From Outdoor Feedlots For Sheep, D J. Carter
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The humble woodchip, widwly used as a soil mulch in Western Australian gardens, is set tto take a new role as a dust inhibito in assembly yards used to hold live sheep for export.
Research by the Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service Branch has shown that, of the materials tested, woodchips were the most effective in preventing dust being generated. Wind speeds had to approach a "near gale" before dust developedfrom the protected soil.
The use of woodchips, therefore, provides a practical alternative to stabalising the soil and preventing an environmental problem associated with one of the State's valuable …
Sheep Lice : Prospects For Eradication, F C. Wilkinson
Sheep Lice : Prospects For Eradication, F C. Wilkinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Sheep biting lice have been controlled over the past 86 years in Western australia by a combination of routine insecticidal treatment after shearing and action by the department of Agriculture officers under legislation.
In July 1987 the sheep industry and the State Government will implement a plan to eradicate lice from sheep flocks in the agricultural areas and eventually in the pastoral areas. To achieve this the co-operation of many sectors of the industry will be required. Assuming co-operation is forthcoming, it is possible that by 1996 wool from agricultural areas will be free of lice and insecticidal treatment form …
Breeding Bird Populations In A Proposed Wetland Treatment Area Of Northern Minnesota, Joann M. Hanowski, Gerald J. Niemi
Breeding Bird Populations In A Proposed Wetland Treatment Area Of Northern Minnesota, Joann M. Hanowski, Gerald J. Niemi
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
A census of breeding bird populations was taken in a 40- hectare wetland near Biwabik, Minnesota, prior to the use of this wetland for phosphorus removal from treated wastewater. The wetland was comprised of four distinct habitat types: shrub swamp, black ash (Fraxinus nigra) forest, open coniferous forest, and closed coniferous forest. We used a line transect (about 4 km in length) to document species composition, relative species abundance, and habitat associations of the bird community. A total of816 individuals (mean= 204) and 45 species (mean = 34) were observed during four censuses in June and July, 1985. Two distinct …
