Fish Protection Measures To Ensure Fish For The Future, Jo Bunting

Fisheries management papers

The protection of Western Australia's aquatic animals, plants and habitats is important for many reasons. Fish, and many aquatic invertebrates, have significant commercial, recreational and social importance. Aquatic habitats provide food, refuge and breeding areas for fish and other animals. In addition, some habitats, such as rocky reefs and seagrass meadows, act as nursery sites for juvenile animals. Some habitats and their inhabitants (such as coral reefs) also have aesthetic values which support economically and socially important industries, such as tourism.

Review Of Recreational Gill, Haul And Cast Netting In Western Australia., F. B. Prokop

Fisheries management papers

In this paper the Recreational Netting Committee has addressed an extremely complex and controversial issue in a forthright manner. They have developed a set of management proposals which accommodates recreational netting while recognizing the concerns of non-netters and the general community. The Committee would like to stress that it considers this plan as a package. For example the Committee would be strongly opposed to the considerable operational restrictions contained under Section 5 if there were not a trade-off in terms of a fairer criteria for which estuaries are open as proposed in Section 6.2. Similarly, the Committee would not be …

All the data available indicate that whiskery sharks are severely over-exploited with stock levels declining by around 10% to 30% of original levels. Current levels of fishing effort are expected to cause the stock to decline further. Gummy sharks have high risk of over exploitation (stock has declined to 40% -50% of original levels. Freshwater Aquaculture In Western Australia., Fisheries Department Of Western Australia

Fisheries management papers

Freshwater aquaculture in Western Australia is a relatively new industry. The first serious attempts began in 1975 after the Government relaxed the regulations on marron to allow for its farming and sale (at the legal minimum size of 17 mm carapace length). Since 1975, marron have been the focus of most attempts at aquaculture although in recent years trout, yabbies, freshwater aquarium fish and a number of other fish species have received greater attention. In 1984 the Minister for Fisheries established the Fish Farming Legislative Review Committee to review and make recommendations on the fish farming provisions of the Fisheries …

Fishing Licences As Security For Loans., Fisheries Department Of Western Australia.

Fisheries management papers

During mid 1988 the Minister for Fisheries at that time, the Hon Julian Grill, sought the establishment of a committee of advice to examine security arrangements for financial institutions providing funds for fishing licences and fishing boats. The prime objective of the Committee was to examine and report upon the requirements for establishing fishing licences as a form of collateral for loans. Economics And Marketing Of Western Australia Pilchards., Scp Fisheries Consultants Pty Ltd

Fisheries management papers

The 1986/87 Australian catch was about 8,300 tonnes. At present levels of fishing,it has been suggested that this could be substantially increased. The fishery is not in danger of over-exploitation. Rather, the problem could be that there is more fish available than existing markets could absorb. However, there are prospects for increasing the present volume of fish sold domestically and for developing new products and markets in Australia and overseas.

Economics And Marketing Of Western Australian Pilchards., Scp Fisheries Consultants Pty Ltd

Fisheries management papers

Most of the Western Australian pilchard catch comes from King George Sound and from the southern coast off Albany where the number of vessels allowed to catch has been controlled. Prospects for increasing production in this area are limited. However, there are indications that considerable quantities of pilchards could be caught in waters to the east and west of Albany, in the inshore declared purse seine development zone. Before allowing fisherman to catch more pilchards in these waters, the Western Australian Government decided that an investigation should be undertaken of the Australian pilchard resources, the domestic and export market situation …
