The College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture was established in 1996 as part of a University of Maine restructure. Many of the individual schools and units within the college had formerly been in the College of Natural Resources, Forestry and Agriculture which itself was established in 1993 following the merger of the College of Forest Resources and College of Applied Sciences and Agriculture. The first dean of the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture was G. Bruce Wiersma.

Professor Glanz came to the University of Maine in 1979 and stayed for 34 years as an Associate Professor in the School of Biology and Ecology. His research interests focused on the ecology, behavior, and conservation of birds, mammals, and amphibians. Bees are crucial to pollination in unmanaged ecosystems and some crops, and their roles are increasingly understood in four states in the Northeastern U.S., abbreviated “NNE” in this paper: Maine (ME), Massachusetts (MA), New Hampshire (NH), and Vermont (VT). The four states have in common many native bee and plant species, forest types, and natural communities. They share drought events and risk of wildfire (Irland 2013). In 1883, the Maine Board of Agriculture called for the establishment of a formal experiment station in Orono. With the support of state funds the Maine Fertilizer Control and Agricultural Experiment Station (later becoming the Maine Agricultural & Forest Experiment Station). Eventually the Station would expand its research into genetics and breeding, entomology, forestry, food, potatoes, blueberries, and dairy. Such studies have been funded by both state and federal agriculture grants.

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide an insight into the relative financial performance of organic dairy farming through the examination of three years of detailed farm financial records. Farm financial records were collected in person by trained enumerators from organic dairy operations in Maine and Vermont for the 2004–2006 production years. These farm records are complemented by surveys on farm and farmer characteristics along with farmers’ motivational interests for organic dairy production and performance satisfaction. This report, therefore, provides a rich financial perspective on the evolution of organic dairy farming performance unlike single-season surveys.

Hemigrapsus sanguineus, commonly known as the Asian shore crab, was first discovered on the east coast of the United States in New Jersey in 1988. The spread of this invasive crab has been rapid, and it is now abundant along a large portion of the mid-Atlantic and southern New England coast. Further, an invasion of H. sanguineus into New Hampshire and southern Maine is in its preliminary stages. The introduction of this crab to North America could potentially affect a variety of native species. There is conflicting evidence concerning the negative effects of high concentrations of dissolved oxygen on nitrifying bacteria. This project was developed to determine what happens to an established slime layer in a fixed-film, flow-through bio-filter, exposed to oxygen supersaturation. Specific objectives were to determine qualitatively and quantitatively whether the treatment is actually beneficial after acclimation, and whether rapid fluctuations in DO are detrimental to an acclimated culture.

This report describes the development and testing of a new material for use as a filter medium in recirculating aquaculture systems and other water quality control situations. The material consists of a combination of activated carbon and a hydrophilic urethane foam in a homogeneous matrix. Its physical properties relevant to filtration were determined. It was then tested for its ability to remove various dissolved organic compounds and inorganic nitrogenous compounds in the form of a synthetic waste-water containing ammonia and nitrite. These authors brought fishers into captivity to assess the reproductive cycles of both sexes and to monitor females with known reproductive histories. In addition, kits born in captivity were raised to sexual maturity to monitor growth and development. Here they report on the rates at which fishers were caught, the care and maintenance of fishers while in captivity, and the handling procedures used with 44 fishers taken from the wild and 38 fishers conceived in the wild and born in captivity, during the period from 1990 to 1993.

We developed a technique for evaluating duckling habitat quality that is based on two assumptions. In good habitat young birds (1) grow rapidly and thus are better able t o survive stresses such as inclement weather, and (2) spend relatively less time moving about in search of food and more time resting and thus are less conspicuous to predators. We imprinted artificially incubated and hatched ducklings by being present at the time of hatching; i.e., the ducklings thought we were their mother. Recordings of pressure changes and electrical activity from the proximal small intestine of seven to eight-week-old unanesthetized chickens were made with chronically implanted transducers. The recordings were used to quantitate and determine the relationships among basic electric rhythm (BER), spike potentials (SP), and intestinal contractions (IC) of the duodenum. The omnipresence of the BER was demonstrated. SP were recorded whenever IC were detected. SP numbers and amplitudes were directly related to the strength of IC. Acetylcholine caused a general increase in the number and amplitude of both SP and IC. Epinephrine completely abolished both SP and IC. The results suggest …

The response of waterfowl populations to marsh management on the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge in eastern Maine was evaluated. The objectives were (1) to estimate populations of breeding waterfowl in 1974 and 1975 and compare these numbers with trends of the past 30 years and (2) to interpret these trends in relation to vegetative and other environmental changes that have occurred. The long-term trend of black duck numbers on the primary study areas was downward.
