Fisheries management papers
General concern of all states was the actual AND potential impact of charter fishing on the resource and the inability to measure such impacts. The perceived problem with dual licensing was unregulated effort and the abilit to circumvent management controls. This paper provides current charter boat management arrangements in Australia, why they should be managed, types of charter vessels, Licensing, Management of recreational only charter vessels, Non-consumptive charters, Management guides and small scale charter operators, Commonwealth jurisdiction, Development of agreed strategies and Identification of future needs.

Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus, collected from commercial catches in Chesapeake Bay and in Virginia and North Carolina coastal waters during 1988-1991 (n=1,967) were aged from transverse otolith sections. Ages 1-8 were recorded, but eight-year-old fish were rare. Marginal increment analysis showed that for ages 1-7, annuli are formed once a year during the period April-May. Otolith age readings were precise: >99% agreement within and between readers. Observed lengths-at-age were highly variable and growth rate decreased after the first year. Despite the high variability in sizes-at-age, observed lengths for ages 1-7 fit the von Bertalanffy growth model (r2=0.99; n=753) well. …

Growth rates, body weight, density and biomass of ribbed mussels, Geukensia demissa (Dillwyn), were determined at Spartina alterniflora marsh-flat sites in Jamaica Bay, New York (Lower Hudson Estuary). Cumulative growth and annual growth increments varied but rates were lower at sites within the central bay relative to peripheral sites. Local variability both in size at Ring-1 and size-specific annual growth rates probably account for the variability in cumulative length. No pattersn were noted in frequency distributions of shell size but congruence in age structure was observed among neighboring sites in some areas of the bay. Mussel densities were greater within …

The effects of temperature, food concentration, salinity and turbidity on the growth and development of Crassostrea virginica larvae were investigated with a time-dependent mathematical model. Formulations used in the model for larval growth are based upon laboratory data. Simulations were done using temperature conditions characteristic of Laguna Madre, Galveston Bay, Apalachicola Bay, North Inlet and Chesapeake Bay. These simulations show that the duration of the planktonic larval phase, which is determined by larval growth rate, decreases at lower latitudes in response to warmer water temperatures. A staged, partially submerged rotating biological disk system was assessed to determine its performance in the reduction of detectable concentrations of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH0 attributable to waste crankcase oils (WCCO) in wastewater effluent. Results indicate that such biological systems for the removal of WCCO aromatic hydrocarbons may be a viable alternative to secondary treatment systems commonly being employed.

The pearl oyster fishery of Kuwait was monitored daily from January 1989 to May 1990. Landings of pearl oysters in 1989 totaled 287 tons with a market value of U.S. $1.0 million. Commercial pearls (>3 mm) were estimated to be present in one of every 4200 oysters. Most of the pearl oysters landed were new recruits with hinge lengths between 40-56 mm. There was a curvilinear relationship between total weight and size of oysters (length) and the sex ratio approached 1:1. A survey of characters defining the Neoteleostei, Eurypterygii, Ctenosquamata, Acanthomorpha, Paracanthopterygii and Acanthopterygii convincingly places the Lampridiformes within the acanthomorph clade. Lampridiforms are primitive with respect to the Percomorpha but their precise placement among basal acanthomorphs remains unclear. In the absence of a specific sister-group hypothesis, Polymixia, percopsiform and beryciform taxa were used as outgroups in a cladistic analysis of the order. Monophyly of Lampridiformes is supported by four apomorphies; three are correlated modifications related to the evolution of a unique feeding mechanism in which the maxilla slides forward with the premaxilla during jaw protrusion. This report presents a summary page for each tow conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Juvenile Fish and Blue Crab Trawl Survey during 1991. What is the probability that zebra mussels will invade specific bodies of water within a given state? If they do invade, will they become economic and ecological pests as they have in portions of the Great Lakes? These and similar questions are addressed, with the expectation that management strategies can be developed to delay, mitigate, or possibly even prevent zebra mussel invasions, in some areas.
