Performance Of 10 Slicing Cucumbers In Southwest Michigan, Ron G. Goldy Dec 2019

Performance Of 10 Slicing Cucumbers In Southwest Michigan, Ron G. Goldy

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

Fruit quality and yield were lower than in previous Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center slicing cucumber trials. This may primarily be to lower bee activity affecting pollination, fruit set and fruit shape. However, from this trial Bristol, SVCS0927, LS 75-1011, Darlington, and Perfect 10 deserve consideration for further commercial planting in Southwest Michigan.

Evaluation Of Transplant Root Length On Bell Pepper Yield And Quality, Ron G. Goldy Dec 2019

Evaluation Of Transplant Root Length On Bell Pepper Yield And Quality, Ron G. Goldy

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

Allowing bell pepper transplants to develop a taproot system was detrimental to early plant growth. However, it did not have a significant detrimental effect on most fruit yield and quality parameters measured, and by final harvest, plants of all three root length treatments had similar above ground plant weights.

Performance Of 18 Fresh Market And Eight Saladette Tomato Cultivars In Southwest Michigan In 2019, Ron G. Goldy Dec 2019

Performance Of 18 Fresh Market And Eight Saladette Tomato Cultivars In Southwest Michigan In 2019, Ron G. Goldy

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

It was again a difficult year for growing tomatoes at the Southwest Michigan Research and Extension Center. Rain shortly after field planting induced early bacterial disease infection, leading to defoliation and decreased fruit quality. The best performers in the fresh market trial were Red Snapper, Camaro, Saybrook, Jolene, and Myrtle. It was difficult to get good separation in the saladette trial. No entries rose above the others.

Response Of Cucumber, Yellow Squash, And Zucchini To Six Nitrogen Rates, Ron G. Goldy Dec 2019

Response Of Cucumber, Yellow Squash, And Zucchini To Six Nitrogen Rates, Ron G. Goldy

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

There were few significant differences across the six nitrogen levels for the traits measured for all three crops. No clear trends were observed as nitrogen level was increased from 50 to 175#/acre. Better separation may have been obtained with more replication. Results indicate growers of slicing cucumber, yellow squash, and zucchini should be able to obtain adequate fruit yields using a season total of between 75 and 100#/acre nitrogen.

Spring Black Rot-Resistant Cabbage Cultivar Evaluation, Chris Smigell, John Strang, John Snyder Nov 2019

Spring Black Rot-Resistant Cabbage Cultivar Evaluation, Chris Smigell, John Strang, John Snyder

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

Fourteen green fresh-market cabbage cultivars were evaluated at the University of Kentucky horticultural farm in Lexington in a replicated trial to evaluate their performance in Central Kentucky. Cultivars were listed in seed catalogs as having black rot (Xanthomonas campestris) resistance or tolerance. Cultivars were grown on bare soil following University of Kentucky recommendations to commercial cabbage growers. Plants were not inoculated with X. campestris, and Badge SC bactericide was applied once early in the season. ‘Lucky Ball’ was the top-performing early-season cultivar, being consistently tender, sweet to slightly sweet, and having little to no sulfur aftertaste. Its …

Zucchini Cultivar Evaluation For Production In West-Central Indiana, 2018, Petrus Langenhoven Jan 2019

Zucchini Cultivar Evaluation For Production In West-Central Indiana, 2018, Petrus Langenhoven

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

The state of Indiana is not known nationally as a major zucchini producing state. However, small farm operators produce zucchini generally for local farmers markets, restaurants and some retail outlets. Gowers always wants to know which variety is most suitable for their farming location and market. There are a plethora of varieties available that have different fruit types and growth habits. Characteristics like potential yield and disease resistance are always very important considerations for growers. This paper reports on ten zucchini entries (Table 1; Fig. 3-12) that were evaluated at the Throckmorton Purdue Agriculture Center/Meigs Horticulture Facility, Lafayette, Indiana.

Missouri Novelty Melon Trial Results, James Quinn, Ramón Arancibia, David Trinklein Jan 2019

Missouri Novelty Melon Trial Results, James Quinn, Ramón Arancibia, David Trinklein

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

Novelty, specialty or personalized melons are generally smaller and different from traditional Midwest watermelons, cantaloupes or muskmelons. Sugar Cube is a successful example. This project by MU Extension was to evaluate four novelty melons on yield, quality and storage, with Sugar Cube as the control. Included in the evaluation were Brilliant (Canary), Honey Orange (crispy flesh Honeydew), Lambkin (Piel De Sapo), and Lilly (small & early Crenshaw). Each has an appearance and taste profile distinctly different from cantaloupe. The results of this project should give confidence to growers interested in novelty melons, especially for Brilliant (Canary type) and Lambkin (Piel …

Colored Sweet Bell And Tapered Pepper Cultivar Evaluation For High Tunnel Production In West-Central Indiana, 2019, Petrus Langenhoven

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

There is huge potential for the production of sweet bell and tapered peppers in high tunnels. However, information regarding appropriate varieties and yield potential in Indiana is lacking. This paper reports on ten colored sweet bell and tapered pepper varieties that were evaluated at the Purdue Student Farm, West Lafayette, Indiana. Top bell pepper varieties include Chesapeake and Flavorburst. Carmen and Escamillo were some of the top tapered pepper performers.

Midwest Vegetable Trial Report For 2018, Elizabeth Maynard, Petrus Langenhoven, Wenjing Guan, Brad R. Bergefurd

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

This is a compilation of 15 research trial reports from four land-grant universities in the Midwestern United States. Crops include cantaloupe, pickling cucumber, pepper, potato, pumpkin, summer squash and zucchini, sweet corn, tomato, and watermelon. Somecrops were evaluated in high tunnels or hoophouses. Most trials evaluated different cultivars or varieties. One report addressed plant spacing for sweet corn and one addressed soil block for production of tomato seedlings. A list of vegetable seed sources and a list of other online sources of vegetable trial reports are also included.
