Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was carried out during 1995-1996 in Çukurova. In the experiment, Priana and Belliana were used as comparative cultivars. In addition, 12.5, 25, 50 ppm of NAA and 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 ppm of carbaryl and 50 % of hand thinning were applied about three weeks after full bloom. The results showed that 50 ppm NAA increased both the thinning rate and the fruit size while 1000 and 2000 ppm of carbaryl had a positive effect on the fruit size and weight without having any effect on thinning. Although the treatments gave better results on the fruit size and …

Fermentation Of Glucose And Fructose By Leuconostoc Mesenteroides, Hüseyi̇n Erten

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The preferred order of glucose and fructose uptake by Leuconostoc mesenteroides was investigated in Glucose Fructose Yeast Extract Amino Acid medium with and without the addition of salt under anaerobic conditions. Strains NCIMB 8023 and NCFB 811 preferentially utilised glucose over fructose. A higher biomass was obtained when employing strain NCIMB 8023 compared with strain NCFB 811. The strains studied produced lactate and ethanol as major end-products, with lactate synthesis being greater than ethanol. Small amounts of acetate and mannitol were also formed.

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Five strawberry cultivars were grown as frigo seedlings planted in July by using two management systems, open grow-ing and high tunnel, in 1996 and 1997. Yield, earliness and some quality characters were observed. The high tunnel system made the crop 2-3 weeks earlier than the open field system with a longer period. Yield was also high in the high tunnel system with 1053 grams per plant while it was 877 grams in open growing. Miranda was the highest yielding cultivar in both management systems. Cultivars Camarosa and Miranda were superior for fruit weight and the rate of high quality.
