The object of these experiments was to determine with practically sound, whole potatoes the effect of cold storage during various portions of the storage period and continual cellar storage upon: (a) the weight losses during numerous intervals of storage period; (b) the condition of the potatoes at the end of the storage period in June; and (c) the relative seed value of the various lots of potatoes as determined by field experiments.

Some Factors Affecting The Cooking Quality Of The Pea And Great Northern Types Of Dry Beans, Edna B. Snyder

Dry beans of the Great Northern and pea-bean type from Nebraska and several other bean-producing states were studied to determine the factors affecting the cooking quality. A standard cooking procedure with distilled water was used to disclose differences in cooking quality, and the percentage of beans too hard for table use was determined for each cooked portion. The factors studied were: soaking, including time and temperatures; storage, including time and storage conditions; age; size; place of origin; effect of chemical solutions; and the composition of the seed coat. 1. Three groups totaling 123 chicks were fed accurately known amounts of rations containing 0.9, 1.5, and 2.3 per cent of calcium with liberal provision of the antirachitic factor so that conditions for assimilation and deposition were favorable. 2. By means of the comparative slaughter test the retention of ingested nitrogen was found to be about 37 per cent, and that of phosphorus about 28 per cent in the three lots. 3. A study was made of the effect of pregnancy and parturition upon the weight cycle of dairy cows of the Ayrshire, Guernsey, Holstein, and Jersey breeds according to gestation periods from data accumulated from records for the period 1922 to 1934 of the dairy herd of the Dairy Husbandry Department of the University of Nebraska. The weights of the cows were obtained from three consecutive weighings made at the middle of each month and daily weighings beginning at the 265th day of pregnancy and continuing for 30 days after calving.
