Since literature pertaining to breeding and inheritance in safflower was found to be very limited, fundamental research was instituted to determine: (A) a method for making controlled crosses, (B) the amount of natural crossing that occurs, (C) the association of oil content of seed with other seed and plant characteristics, and (D) the mode of inheritance of sterility, flower color, spinelessness, attached pappus and rust resistance. Results on natural and controlled crossing in safflower and the association of oil content in seed with other plant and seed characteristics have been reported.
