Jointed Goatgrass Management With Imazamox-Resistant Cultivars In A Winter Wheat–Fallow Rotation, Andrew R. Kniss, Drew J. Lyon, Stephen D. Miller

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Jointed goatgrass (Aegilops cylindrica Host) is an economically important weed in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–fallow production regions of the United States. Few options exist for management of jointed goatgrass in winter wheat due to the close genetic relationship between the two species. This research evaluated use of imazamox herbicide (2-[(RS)-4-isopropyl-4- methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin-2-yl]-5-methoxymethylnicotinic acid) in an imazamox-resistant (IR) winter wheat–fallow rotation over 6 yr when grown continuously or in rotation with a conventional winter wheat cultivar. The objectives of this study were to compare use patterns of IR technology in winter wheat with respect to jointed goatgrass density and …

Evaluation Of Dry Distillers Grains Plus Solubles Inclusion On Performance And Economics Of Finishing Beef Steers, C. D. Buckner, T. L. Mader, G. E. Erickson, S. L. Colgan, D. R. Mark, V. R. Bremer, K. K. Karges, M. L. Gibson Jan 2008

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

A 167-d feedlot study was conducted to evaluate feeding increasing levels of dry distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) to finishing cattle and the impact on performance and profitability. Crossbred steer calves (n = 240, BW = 306 ± 24.5 kg) were used in 30 pens with dietary treatments of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% DDGS dietary inclusion (DM basis). Quadratic relationships (P < 0.05) were observed for final BW and ADG as dietary DDGS increased, with the greatest ADG observed at 20% inclusion. The DMI was not affected (P > 0.15) by DDGS level, but G:F tended to be quadratic (P = 0.10) as 20% DM inclusion had the greatest value, although steers fed all levels of DDGS had numerically greater G:F compared with steers fed no …

Effects Of Concentrate Level And Pen Configuration On Performance Of Boer Crossbred Goat Kids, M. E. Corrigan, J. S. Drouillard, E. R. Loe, B. E. Depenbusch, M. J. Quinn Jan 2008

Effects Of Concentrate Level And Pen Configuration On Performance Of Boer Crossbred Goat Kids, M. E. Corrigan, J. S. Drouillard, E. R. Loe, B. E. Depenbusch, M. J. Quinn

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

One hundred eighty-one Boer-sired goat kids from dams of predominantly Spanish breeding (17.6 ± 2.34 kg initial BW; 177 wethers, 4 doelings) were used to determine optimum inclusion level of concentrate in diets fed to goats in confinement. Effects of elevated loafing areas on performance were also examined. Goats were blocked by weight (2 blocks per treatment) and randomly assigned to 1 of 12 outdoor pens (4.3 m2; 15 to 16 head/pen) with concrete floors. Pens of goats were randomly assigned, within block, to 1 of 6 treatments. A 2 × 3 factorial arrangement was used with factors consisting of …

Is Preventative, Concurrent Management Of The Soybean Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) And Bean Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Possible?, Kevin D. Johnson, Matthew E. O'Neal, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Marlin E. Rice Jan 2008

Is Preventative, Concurrent Management Of The Soybean Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) And Bean Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Possible?, Kevin D. Johnson, Matthew E. O'Neal, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Marlin E. Rice

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

In Iowa, the management of insect pests in soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., has been complicated by the arrival of the invasive species soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and occasional outbreaks of bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Förster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), populations leading to economic losses. Several insecticide programs designed to reduce abundance of the overwintered and first generation C. trifurcata and the incidence of bean pod mottle virus were evaluated over 3 yr (2004-2006) for their impacts on A. glycines populations, at three locations in Iowa (Floyd, Lucas, and Story counties). There was no significant overlap of either …

Case Study: Nutrient Values Of Spring And Summer Annual Forages In A Single Cut Harvest1, B. A. Weichenthal, D. D. Baltensperger, K. P. Vogel, S. D. Masterson, J. M. Krall Jan 2008

Case Study: Nutrient Values Of Spring And Summer Annual Forages In A Single Cut Harvest1, B. A. Weichenthal, D. D. Baltensperger, K. P. Vogel, S. D. Masterson, J. M. Krall

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

The Central High Plains of the United States (western Nebraska and Kansas and eastern Wyoming and Colorado) is a major beef cattle production area, but it is subject to periodic droughts. Annual forages are an essential feed source for maintaining beef cattle herds during periods of drought and winter months. The objective of this study was to determine nutrient concentrations in annual forages, including barley, oats, triticale, forage sorghums, sudangrass, pearl millet, foxtail millet, field peas, soybeans, and vetch grown for hay in this region. The summer annuals—forage sorghums, sudangrass, pearl millet, and foxtail millet—were grown in replicated rain-fed and …

Interval Mapping Of Quantitative Trait Loci For Corky Ringspot Disease Resistance In A Tetraploid Population Of Potato (Solanum Tuberosum Subsp. Tuberosum), Dong-Man Khu, Jim Lorenzen, Christine A. Hackett, Stephen L. Love Jan 2008

Love

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Corky ringspot disease (CRS) resistance is an ideal target trait for breeding using marker-assisted selection (MAS) due to the high variability in field disease incidence that complicates screening for resistance. To develop molecular marker(s) associated with CRS resistance, a linkage map was constructed for a tetraploid population of 92 genotypes in order to conduct quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis. The population was tested for CRS resistance in an infested screening field for four years. Broad sense heritability and its standard error of CRS disease resistance were 0.80 (±0.16). A total of 892 AFLP, 95 SSR, and 5 SSCP markers were …

Evaluation Of Management Strategies For Bean Leaf Beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) And Bean Pod Mottle Virus (Comoviridae) In Soybean, Jeffrey D. Bradshaw, Marlin E. Rice, John H. Hill Jan 2008

Evaluation Of Management Strategies For Bean Leaf Beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) And Bean Pod Mottle Virus (Comoviridae) In Soybean, Jeffrey D. Bradshaw, Marlin E. Rice, John H. Hill

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Cerotoma trifurcata Förster (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and Bean pod mottle virus (Comoviridae) (BPMV) both can reduce yield and seed quality of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of systemic, seed-applied, and foliar-applied insecticides for the management of this pest complex at three locations in central, northeastern, and northwestern Iowa during 2002-2004. Seed-applied insecticide was evaluated according to a currently recommended management program for Iowa (i.e., insecticide applications that target emerging overwintered beetles, F0, and the first seasonal generation, F1). The experimental treatments included seed-applied (thiamethoxam, 0.3-0.5 g [AI] kg-1 …

Identification Of A Candidate Gene For The Wheat Endopeptidase Ep-D1 Locus And Two Other Sts Markers Linked To The Eyespot Resistance Gene Pch1, Jeffrey M. Leonard, Christy J. W. Watson, Arron H. Carter, Jennifer L. Hansen, Robert S. Zemetra, Dipak K. Santra, Kimberly G. Campbell, Oscar Riera-Lizarazu

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Wheat is prone to strawbreaker foot rot (eyespot), a fungal disease caused by Oculimacula yallundae and O. acuformis. The most effective source of genetic resistance is Pch1, a gene derived from Aegilops ventricosa. The endopeptidase isozyme marker allele Ep-D1b, linked to Pch1, has been shown to be more effective for tracking resistance than DNA-based markers developed to date. Therefore, we sought to identify a candidate gene for Ep-D1 as a basis for a DNA-based marker. Comparative mapping suggested that the endopeptidase loci Ep-D1 (wheat), enp1 (maize), and Enp (rice) were orthologous. Since the product of the maize endopeptidase locus enp1 …

Areawide Pest Management Of Cereal Aphids In Dryland Wheat Systems Of The Great Plains, Usa, Kristopher Giles, Gary L. Hein, Frank Peairs Jan 2008

Areawide Pest Management Of Cereal Aphids In Dryland Wheat Systems Of The Great Plains, Usa, Kristopher Giles, Gary L. Hein, Frank Peairs

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

In the Great Plains of the USA from Wyoming to Texas, dryland winter wheat either is regularly grown continuously or is followed by a year of fallow in semi-arid locales (Royer and Krenzer, 2000). It has been well documented that these continuous monocultures can, over time, lead to increased levels of all types of pests (i.e. insects, diseases and weeds) (Andow, 1983, 1991; Vandermeer, 1989; Cook and Veseth, 1990; Elliott et al., 1998a; Way, 1998; Ahern and Brewer, 2002; Boyles et al., 2004; Brewer and Elliott, 2004; Men et al., 2004). Relative to insect pests, the ephemeral …
