Examination Of Hide Production, Hide Grades, And Economic Losses Of Inferior Hide Grades In Egypt During 2002 To 2013, Mostafa A. Mandour, Sanad T. Atallah

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

The study examined hide production and economic losses of inferior hide grades in Egypt during 2002 to 2013. Data were obtained from the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics for various livestock, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way or two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The majority of hides produced were from buffaloes and were Grade 1 hides. Overall, the losses from condemned hides decreased from EGP1,756 in 2002 to EGP425 in 2013 (a decrease of 76%). Losses from Grade 3 hides also decreased from EGP141,369 in 2002 to EGP 63,859 in 2013 (a decrease of 55%). A concerted …

Successes, Challenges, And Future: Farm Service Agency In Georgia, Fred Harrison

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

First of all, let me say to my brother Dr. Hill, you are my keeper. That is something that he and I have in common (Am I my brother’s keeper?) and let me also acknowledge Tuskegee University for all that it does, for all that it has done, and for all that it will continue to do for people like us. Well, I bought a farm down in Macon County, GA, and it is a small farm, as a matter of fact where is Dr. Tasha Hargrove? Tasha and one other person, Dr. Zabawa did a study several years ago …

Successes, Challenges, And Future: Farm Service Agency In South Carolina, Wilfred L. Pace

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

Wow, is all I can say! Let me just tell you that I am Wilfred Pace, the first African American to serve as the Farm Service Agency Director (FSA) for the State of South Carolina and I stand here privileged to just sit between wisdom and knowledge. Now you say, “why does Wilfred Pace stand between wisdom and knowledge?” I must then admit that I am justice, so three in the saddle makes it complete, but there is a fourth that is not here whom I wish you would have had the opportunity to meet. Jewel (Bronaugh) brings remarkable experience …

Dr. Hill has given us our assignments and I want to be obedient to that; what have been the successes, what have been the challenges, and where do we see the Farm Service …

Price Seasonality In The Catfish Value Chain In Uganda, James O. Bukenya Aug 2018

Price Seasonality In The Catfish Value Chain In Uganda, James O. Bukenya

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

Seasonal patterns in production and demand are common in many agricultural markets. Charting these patterns provides information that complements fundamental and technical analyses. It is in this spirit that this paper seeks to examine price seasonality in the catfish value chain in Uganda. The analysis draws on monthly prices taken from secondary source recorded data and uses moving average index to chart price patterns. The results reveal distinct seasonal patterns in the farm-gate, ex-vessel, retail, and wholesale market channels. Across market channels, the results for farm-gate versus ex-vessel prices reveal that farm-gate prices are more affected by seasonal effects compared …

Determinants Of Consumer Preference For And Expenditure On Rice In The Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania, Japhet S. Laizer, Ntam R. Baharanyi, Robert Zabawa, Reuben M.J. Kadigi

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

The primary objective of the study was to examine determinants of consumer preferences for and expenditure on rice in the Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania. Data were collected from a random sample of 230 participants, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analyses. The descriptive statistics revealed that domestic rice was preferred by a majority of the participants over imported rice. The most important attribute for consumers was aroma, followed by taste, cleanness, and price. The logistic regression analysis showed that price of a substitute, quality, and household size had significant effects on preference for rice, domestic or imported. The OLS analysis …

The Effect Of Two Different Harvesting Methods On The Yield Of 'Topbunch' And 'Hi-Crop' Collards (Brassica Oleracea (L)) When Grown In A Wiregrass Tunnel House, Veronica E. Walton, Raymon Shange, Melissa Johnson, Edward Sparks, Victor Khan, James E. Currington, Ramble Ankumah, Nathaniel Ellison, George X. Hunter Jr., Jeffery L. Moore

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

A study was conducted to determine if 100% or 50% harvesting of collard leaves was a suitable recommendation for Tunnel House producers. The experiment was conducted as a split-split plot design with varieties as the main plots, harvesting 100% or 50% of leaves as the sub-plots, and days after transplanting as the subplots. All treatments were replicated three times, drip irrigated, and fertilized according to soil test recommendations. The results showed significant interactions between varieties and method of harvest, for leaf numbers and weight. Conversely, the varieties showed significant differences for yield but not leaf numbers. Both varieties showed significant …

Currington, Ramble Ankumah, Nathaniel Ellison, George X. Hunter Jr., Jeffery L. Moore

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

A study was conducted to determine if a 100% or 50% harvest intensity of ‘Topbunch’ collards leaves could be a recommended practice for Tunnel House producers. The experiment was conducted as a split-plot design with harvest dates as main plots, and harvesting intensity of 100% or 50% of leaves as sub-plots. All treatments were replicated three times, drip irrigated, and fertilized according to soil test recommendations. The results showed significant interactions between harvest methods and dates for number and weight of leaves harvested. There were also significant differences for the weight of leaves harvested and numbers. The leaf recovery rates …

The Effect Of Two Planting Dates And Methods On Snap Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris) Production In A Tunnel House, Edward Sparks, Victor Khan, Ramble Ankumah, James E. Currington, Nathaniel Ellison, George X. Hunter Jr., Jeffery Moore Mar 2018

The Effect Of Two Planting Dates And Methods On Snap Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris) Production In A Tunnel House, Edward Sparks, Victor Khan, Ramble Ankumah, James E. Currington, Nathaniel Ellison, George X. Hunter Jr., Jeffery Moore

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

The study was conducted to evaluate the impact of two planting dates and methods on snap bean yields in a tunnel house. The main plots included planting dates March 17 and 31, 2016 for first and second plantings. The sub-plots consisted of planting Method 1 where one seed per hill was planted every 4” apart, and planting Method 2 where three seeds per hill were planted every 12” apart; each treatment combination was replicated four times. The results of the study showed that it took 55 days for the snap beans to be ready for harvest for both planting dates. …

An Analysis Of The Characteristics And Practices Of Selected Florida Small Livestock Producers: A Focus On Production And Processing, Jannette R. Bartlett, David Nii O. Tackie, Dana Reid, Akua Adu-Gyamfi, Angela Mckenzie-Jakes

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

The study assessed the characteristics and practices of small livestock producers, emphasizing production and processing. Data were obtained from a convenience sample of seventy small producers from selected counties in Florida, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including chi-square tests. The socioeconomic characteristics showed that part-time producers, White producers, middle-aged producers, fairly educated producers, and moderate-income producers dominated the group. A majority of the producers practiced rotational grazing, fed a combination of forage and concentrate, and less than half conducted soil tests regularly. Moreover, over half had parasite problems and treated them primarily with anthelmintics. Nearly all producers sold animals live, …
