A scouting protocol for cotton insect pests was developed which combines high resolution, multispectral remotely sensed imagery with a belt transect that crosses rows of cotton. Imagery was used to determine sample site selection while estimating plant bug abundance in a more than 200 ac. cotton field in 1997. Tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris) counts were acquired using a standard drop cloth for each of eight rows along a transect. The sample data indicated that plant bug population densities spatially vary as a function of different spectral (color) classes present on the imagery. We postulate that such classified …

Many mycotoxins and certain drug residues can be important at very low concentrations in feeds and foods. Government regulatory agencies establish maximum acceptance concentrations (Action Levels) to avoid proven effects of known toxins and provide Advisory Levels where effects are not yet well established. The Action Levels for the aflatoxins range from 5 to 300 ppb (ng/g) depending on the particular toxin and the intended use of the feed or food. Other naturally occurring mycotoxins, such as DON, zearalenones, and fumonisons, have advisory levels in the range of 1 to 5 ppm (j.A-g/g) . Chemotherapeutic agents in feeds must be …

In row crops, a skip is a length of row within the drill where the crop has failed to establish. If the number of skips and their mean length per acre becomes too high, then considerable losses in crop yield occur. Frequently, farmers are faced with the decision to replant a crop which has row skips. To make the best decision, reliable estimates of the stand loss due to skips must be available.
