Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Three hundred and nineteen sows were utilized to study the effects of pregnant mare serum and P.G 600 on reproductive efficiency. Sows were randomly allotted to treatments. Sows were evaluated for age (# of parities), breed composition and body condition score. Three sows who shared all three fields in common were randomly treated with one of three treatments the morning after weaning: 1. (S) Controls: 5ml of Sterile Saline Solution 0.9% 2. (M) Treatment (PMSG): 12ml of Pregnant Mare Serum 3. (P) Treatment (PG600)® 5ml of P.G. 600 (Intervet America Inc., Millsboro, DE) No differences were observed for total number …

Relationships Of Body Condition, Blood Glucose And Insulin Concentration Of Grazing Horses, Ashley Montfort May 2007

Relationships Of Body Condition, Blood Glucose And Insulin Concentration Of Grazing Horses, Ashley Montfort

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A recent study has reported that blood glucose levels and founder in horses consuming forage/concentrate mixed diets are positively correlated (Pass et al., 1998). Other studies have reported body fat and insulin resistance are also positively correlated in horses and humans (Hoffman et al., 2003; Boshell et al., 1968; DeFonzo et al, 1991; Kahn et al., 2000). Few studies have monitored these relationships in horses consuming forage only diets, even though the incidence of grass founder is quite high in obese horses and ponies Four thin, four moderate, and four obese horses were grouped two mares and two geldings per …

Faculty Publications

This research aimed to evaluate the effects of adding a combination of exogenous enzymes to starter diets varying in protein content and fed to broilers vaccinated at day of hatch with live oocysts and then challenged with mixed Eimeria spp. Five hundred four 1-d-old male Cobb-500 chickens were distributed in 72 cages. The design consisted of 12 treatments. Three anticoccidial control programs [ionophore (IO), coccidian vaccine (COV), and coccidia-vaccine + enzymes (COV + EC)] were evaluated under 3 CP levels (19, 21, and 23%), and 3 unmedicated-uninfected (UU) negative controls were included for each one of the protein levels. Color, Cooking Loss And Textural Properties Of Patties As Affected By Catfish Belly Flap Mince Size And Cooking Method, Jin M. Kim, Bartholomew W. Green Jan 2007

Color, Cooking Loss And Textural Properties Of Patties As Affected By Catfish Belly Flap Mince Size And Cooking Method, Jin M. Kim, Bartholomew W. Green

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Patties were prepared with different sizes of channel catfish belly flap mince. Belly flap meat was minced using four different sizes of openings of plate, mixed with salt, formed, and cooked by two methods, in water and oven. Results indicated no differences (P>0.05) in Kramer shear break force in the patties cooked by different methods for same size of mince. As size of meat particles for patties decreased, increased were hardness and gumminess, and color difference from fillet, but decreased were Kramer shear break force as well as percent cooking loss (p< 0.05). Patties cooked in an oven showed greater color difference from fillet, percent cooking loss, hardness, and gumminess than those cooked in water for the same size of meat particles (p < 0.05).
