Orderly Production And Marketing In The Beef-Pork Sector, John E. Trierweiler, James B. Hassler

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

This study will present economic models for analyzing temporal equilibrium positions for the beef-pork sector. The issues of spatial distribution, storage, and meat forms will not be directly analyzed. Grade and yield changes for various carcass classes will, however, be implied in the carrying costs of the animal. The models will be designed such that a number of different factors that affect the production and marketing of beef and pork can be analyzed simultaneously.

An Application Of Statistical Decision Theory To Farm Management In Sevier County, Utah, Suwaphot Lakawathana

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The major purpose of this study is to present selected empirical results of a study employing decision-making theory as a framework for considering decision making under risk. The particular problem involves choices between alternative crop rotations for Sevier County farmers. The study demonstrates the usefulness of the Bayesian theory that gives more than a point estimation.

A multiple regression model using two linear terms was employed to determine the influence of snow pack and reservoir storage on water availability for irrigation purposes during July, August, and September.

The Bayesian approach was employed. The optimal action or decision was first determined …

The primary objective of this study was to develop demand equations at retail for selected Venezuelan food commodities. Commodities included for analysis were rice, refined sugar, crude sugar, flour, potatoes, beef, pork, black beans, corn, and powdered milk.

The basic statistical technique employed in the analysis was least squares multiple regression. Although several mathematical forms for these demand equations were evaluated, a log-log transform was found to be most useful. Independent variables included own price, prices of substitutes and complements, time and income. Observations were taken from Venezuelan time series data over the period 1945-1965.

Development of these basic demand …

Another objective is to analyze the resource use and net returns with varying prices for wheat and feed grains. The analysis of resources considers changes in overall levels of resources demanded in response to changing wheat and feed grain prices. Similarly, the analysis of net returns examines differences in net returns in response …

Some Factors Affecting The Growth Of Grain Elevators In South Dakota, Albert E. Raeder Jan 1970

Some Factors Affecting The Growth Of Grain Elevators In South Dakota, Albert E. Raeder

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The grain elevator industry in South Dakota is currently undergoing considerable change. Small, inefficient elevators are being replaced with larger, more mechanized units. In South Dakota in 1960, there were 533 elevator companies in 368 towns but by 1968 only 450 elevator companies survived in 345 towns. An elevator company includes all the facilities and businesses that are under one management. Throughout this study elevator companies will be referred to as elevators. All of this points out that the industry is dynamic and changing. Some elevators keep up with these changes, while others fail to adopt new ideas. What are …

Weed Control Research Pays Dividends, G R W Meadly Jan 1970

Weed Control Research Pays Dividends, G R W Meadly

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

On my bookshelf is a handbook entitled "War on Weeds" or "How to Double our Food Supply."

In many of these countries experiments have been made to ascertain as far as possible the exact damage done by weeds to crops.

Result: In all the experiments, whether made in England or abroad, the mean loss was over 50 per cent.

The level of loss is equally true today, but the methods at our disposal for handling weeds have improved tremendously.

Once Daily Calf Feeding Lowers Rearing Costs, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1970

Once Daily Calf Feeding Lowers Rearing Costs, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The usual method of hand rearing dairy calves involves twice daily feeding of milk or milk substitutes.

This routine adds considerably to the labour necessary at milking time and may have prevented many farmers from putting much effort into dairy beef production.

The report below comes from a 1969 trial carried out at Bramley Research Station to see if once-daily calf feeding was as effective as twice daily feeding.

The trial's results should be considered as early findings from a series of trials being conducted into calf rearing regimes by both the Animal and Dairying Divisions of the Department of …

Supplementing Calves With Tallow : Results Of A Trial At Wokalup Research Station, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE removal of butterfat from milk by separation, reduces the energy content of the milk by about 50 per cent., and must slow the growth of calves unless extra energy is provided from some other source.

In the dairying districts of Western Australia, there has been considerable interest in recent years in the addition of homogenised tallow to skim milk to provide extra energy.

Good calves have been produced by this means.

Dry Supplements Reduce Labour And Cost Of Calf Rearing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1970

Dry Supplements Reduce Labour And Cost Of Calf Rearing, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The conventional method of hand rearing dairy calves in Western Australia calls for the feeding of whole milk, skim milk and/or milk substitutes for periods of up to 16 weeks.

This requirement for milk and labour has often prevented beef production from becoming a major sideline on many wholemilk and butterfat farms.

The two trials reported below* were carried out at Bramley Research Station to see if milk consumption and time to weaning could be reduced by free-feeding hay and cereal based supplements.

The Economic Value Of Streams For Fishing, Dennis Hugo Bianchi Jan 1970

The Economic Value Of Streams For Fishing, Dennis Hugo Bianchi

KWRRI Research Reports

The pressures of urbanization and industrialization are gradually destroying stream fishing sites while at the same time producing an increased demand to serve a greater population. Reservoir construction is one cause behind the diminishing availability of stream fisheries. The recreational value of the stream fishery lost should be deducted from the value gained through reservoir recreation in estimating net benefits for economic justification. This study utilized information collected from 3321 stream fishermen to derive a method and the necessary empirical coefficients for predicting the number and economic value of the average annual fisherman-days enjoyed along average streams throughout Kentucky.
