Row Spacing And Productivity Of Russian Wild Rye Pastures In Semiarid Environments, J. D. Berdahl, S. L. Kronberg, J. R. Hendrickson, J. F. Karn

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

To sustain forage yields in dry years in semiarid climates, row spacings >59cm have been recommended for Russian wild rye [Psathyrostachys juncea (Fisch.) Nevski] (Lawrence & Heinrichs, 1968). However, wide row spacings promote weed invasion, soil erosion, and elevated plant crowns resulting in a rough, "washboard" ground surface (Kilcher, 1961). Jefferson and Kielly (1998) suggested a 30-cm row spacing for optimum sustainable forage yields in Russian wild rye in the semiarid prairie region of Canada. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between row spacing and productivity of Russian wild rye at two semiarid sites near Mandan, in the …

Intercropping Corn And Soybean: Profitability Of Different Agronomic Management Techniques, Raeann Lyn Huffman Apr 2021

Intercropping Corn And Soybean: Profitability Of Different Agronomic Management Techniques, Raeann Lyn Huffman

Theses and Dissertations

Intercropping is the practice of growing multiple crops together in the same field. This is not commonly implemented in Midwest agriculture - instead, current monoculture practices have garnered attention because of the negative environmental impacts of monoculture farming. For this study, corn and soybean were intercropped in a production agriculture setting to investigate the benefits to the producer and the environment. Intercropping corn and soybean crops may reduce the need for added nitrogen (N) fertilizer, saving money on inputs and potential loss of N from the farm to the environment. Soybeans within the system may utilize less of the soil …

Row Spacing Effects On Biomass Components And Accumulated Energy In Elymus Sibiricus L., Jinping Liu, Minghong You

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Elymus sibiricus L. is widely distributed in the eastern Tibetan Plateau of China. Current research on E. sibiricus mainly focuses on resource assessment, breeding, cultivation and dynamics of forage yield. Little is known about the effects of row spacing on the biomass components and accumulated energy of E. sibiricus. We conducted a study to determine the effects of row spacing on biomass components and accumulated energy in E. sibiricus. These data are important to optimize forage and seed production of E. sibiricus, and can assist in developing animal husbandry, structurally adjusting the agricultural industry and protecting the …

Seeding Rate And Row-Spacing Effects On Seed Yield And Yield Components Of Leymus Chinensis (Trin.) Tzvel., Yunhua Han, Xianguo Wang, Tianming Hu, Zhenlei Zhu, Zhengwei Wang, Ying Wang

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Chinese sheepgrass (Leymus chinensis (Trin.) Tzvel.) is widely distributed in the eastern portion of the Inner Mongolian Plateau and the Songnen Grassland of China. This grass is highly salt, cold and drought tolerant and has been the major source of forage for cows and other ruminants in China (Gao et al. 2012). Seed yield of this grass is very low under native conditions because of the low heading percentage and percentage of seed set (Wang et al. 2010). The Hexi Corridor, located in China’s northwestern Gansu Province, is the seed production center of China because of its …

Influence Of Cultural Practices And Herbicide Programs For Managing Glyphosate-Resistant Palmer Amaranth In Cold-Tolerant Sorghum, R. Liu, V. Kumar, R. Perumal, T. Lambert, T. Ostmeyer

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

The widespread evolution of glyphosate-resistant (GR) Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeriS. Wats) has become a serious management concern for grain sorghum producers in western Kansas. To develop an integrated weed management (IWM) system, a field study was conducted at the Kansas State University Agricultural Research Center (KSU-ARC) in Hays, KS, in 2018, to evaluate the effect of sorghum hybrid, row spacing, and herbicide programs on GR Palmer amaranth control, shoot dry weight reduction, and sorghum grain yield. Treatments included two cold-tolerant grain sorghum hybrids: Pioneer 87P06 (commercial check) and ATx645/ ARCH12012R (developed by the KSU-ARC breeding program); row spacing …

Effect Of Residue Management, Row Spacing, And Seeding Rate On Winter Canola Establishment, Winter Survival, And Yield, B. M. Showalter, K. Roozeboom, M. J. Stamm, R. Figger

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Winter survival of canola (Brassica napusL.) is a challenge for producers using high-residue, no-tillage, or reduced-tillage systems. An innovative residue management system being developed by AGCO Corporation was compared to cooperating canola producers’ residue management and planting methods in wheat stubble. This series of on-farm experiments was conducted in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 at ten locations in central and south-central Kansas. The AGCO treatments were 20- or 30-in. row spacing and three seeding rates (100,000, 150,000, and 200,000 seeds/a) for a total of six treatments. The producer treatment at each location included row spacing, seeding rate, and residue management …

Do Winter Canola Hybrids And Open-Pollinated Varieties Respond Differently To Seeding Rate?, B. M. Showalter, K. Roozeboom, M. J. Stamm, G. Cramer Jan 2017

Do Winter Canola Hybrids And Open-Pollinated Varieties Respond Differently To Seeding Rate?, B. M. Showalter, K. Roozeboom, M. J. Stamm, G. Cramer

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Several producers have turned to planting canola in 30-in. rows as a strategy to take advantage of residue management options (e.g. planter-mounted residue managers and strip tillage) to facilitate planting canola in high-residue cropping systems. Canola hybrids are gaining acres in the southern Great Plains and may require different management than the traditional open-pollinated cultivars. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of seeding rate on winter survival and yield of hybrid and open-pollinated winter canola cultivars in 30-in. and 9-in. rows. Experiments were conducted in 2013-2014, 2014-2015, and 2015-2016 at two K-State Research and Extension facilities. …

Twin And Narrow Row Width Effects On Corn (Zea Mays L.) Yield And Weed Management, Grant Mackey

Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences

Corn or maize (Zea mays L.) has been grown in North America for many centuries, and an increase in corn production will continue to be needed. Agriculture producers must meet the demands of feeding and providing for an increasing population of people. In order to meet those needs, different production practices are being investigated as a way to increase grain yield.

Field plots were conducted across the state of Kentucky in 2011 and 2012 to evaluate the interaction between hybrid, row width, and plant density on corn yield. The primary objectives were to test if 1) narrower rows increase …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

To evaluate row spacing and seeding rate effects on yield and plant stand characteristics of high-biomass sorghum, a photoperiod-sensitive cultivar was sown at three different row spacings (76, 38, and 19 cm) and seeding rates (218,000, 306,000, and 393,000 seeds ha−1 for one site-year and 116,000, 204,000, and 291,000 seeds ha−1 for three site-years) from 2009 to 2010 in Alabama and Arkansas, USA. Measurements included above-ground dry matter production, plant height, stem density, and stem diameter. Narrower row spacing (i.e. 19 cm) produced the highest biomass for all site-years. Increasing seeding rate did not affect yield for three …

Effects Of Different Nitrogen Doses And Row Spacing Applications On Yield And Quality Of Oenothera Biennis L. Grown In Irrigated Lowland And Unirrigated Dryland Conditions, Nazim Şekeroğlu, Menşure Özgüven

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Common evening primrose (Oenothera biennis L., Onagraceae) is a biennial herbaceous forb. It is commercially cultivated in over 15 countries for its seed oil, which contains the essential fatty acids, linoleic and gamma-linolenic acid. The present study was carried out to determine the effects of different nitrogen doses (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha^{-1}) and row spacing applications (20, 40 and 60 cm) on yield and quality of Oenothera biennis L. grown in irrigated lowland and unirrigated dryland in the Gukurova conditions region in 2000 and 2001. The field trials were arranged in split-split-plot design with 3 replicates. Some …
