A Resurvey Of The Hampton Roads Corridor Adjacent To The Proposed Site Of The I-664 Bridge-Tunnel, Dexter S. Haven, Lowell W. Fritz

Reports

On 5 September 1980 a survey was conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) on Melzer's leased bottom (48.37 acres) off Newport News Point, Virginia (Figure 1). The study was done at the request of the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation, Suffolk, Virginia in relation to the construction of I-664, Projects 0664-121-102, RW-201 and 0664-061-102, RW-201. The objective of this study was to determine the extent and value of the molluscan resource on Melzer's lease prior to construction activity. A second study would examine the area after the bridge-tunnel is completed.

An Investigation Of Sea Scallops (Placopecten Magellanicus) Of The Mid-Atlantic From Commercial Samples In 1979, Lowell W. Fritz

Reports

Bushel samples of sea scallops (Placopecten Uagellanicus) for height-frequency analysis were obtained aboard the colUIIlercial scalloper, VIRGINIA SURF, from the mid-Atlantic region on two trips during the summer of 1979. Fishing effort was concentrated in three areas of the shelf: 1) Sixty miles east of the Virginia-North Carolina border, 2) Seventy miles east of the coast from Cape Henlopen, Delaware to Atlantic City, New Jersey, and 3) Forty-five miles south of Long Island from Moriches Bay to Bridgehampton. Individuals (212) were retained for age analysis from the catches of the two northern areas. The mean size of scallops caught in …

Population Dynamics Of Atlantic Coast Striped Bass, Morone Saxatilis : Recommendations For Management Strategy And Monitoring And Research Programs, Herbert M. Austin

Reports

The striped bass, Morone saxatilis, was designated in 1977 as a priority species for the development of a management plan by the Northeast Marine Fisheries Board of the State-Federal Fisheries Management Program. A meeting was held in September 1977 in Baltimore to scope out the general plan of work. Subsequently the Board appointed a striped bass sub-board composed of state representatives from Maine through North Carolina to develop a management plan. The sub-board designated a Scientific and Statistics (S&S) Committee composed of scientists from each of the member states.

The Commercial Fishery Of Virginia 1955-77 With Emphasis On The James, York And Rappahannock Rivers, W. J. Hoagman, D. R. Rathbone Jan 1980

The Commercial Fishery Of Virginia 1955-77 With Emphasis On The James, York And Rappahannock Rivers, W. J. Hoagman, D. R. Rathbone

Reports

The commercial fishery of Virginia is one of the most diverse in the United States. Three principal zones exist: the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay, and the major rivers. Finfish, shellfish, and crabs are harvested in each zone. Within the finfishes, several distinct groups are taken.: industrial fish, food fish, and fish for bait. For each group there are migratory, anadromous, and resident species. Within these there are freshwater, brackish, and marine species. The shellfish and crab group make up another category of high value and diverse life forms. The purpose of this report is to summarize a part of the …

Reports

This is a joint presentation by the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources and Community Development, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) (Part I) and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), Department of Ichthyology (Part II).

It is for the period October 1, 1976 to September 30, 1979, and is the completion report for t:he P. L. 89-304 project "Biology and Management of Mid-Atlantic Anadromous Fishes Under Extended Jurisdiction."

Species of concern are: alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), blueback herring (Alosa aestivalis), hickory shad (Alosa mediocris), American shad (Alosa sapidissima), striped bass (Morone saxatilis), Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrhynchus) and the shortnose sturgeon …

Continuous Plankton Records : Zooplankton And Net Phytoplankton In The Southern Regions Of The Middle Atlantic Bight, Cathy E. Myer, Herbert M. Austin

Reports

The objectives of this survey include: 1) determine composition, abundance, and distribution of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities within two distinct water masses, shelf water and slope water; 2) identify seasonal and annual cycles in plankton dynamics, long term trends; and, 3) document spatial and temporal variations in the observed plankton dynamics in terms of timing and duration. Th~s report represents the conclusion of two year's analysis of the Chesapeake Route and is divided into three sections.

Biology And Management Of The American Lobster : June 1974 - December 1978, Robert E. Harris, W. A. Van Engel

Reports

From June 1974 through October 1976, fourteen cruises were made on connnercial lobster trapping vessels off the mid-Atlantic coast. Catch per effort data were collected from 2308 traps, carapace size frequency distributions were formed and analyzed from measurements of over 3300 lobsters and information on quality was obtained from 5487 lobsters. Total catch per trap-haul (CTH) ranged from 0.64 lobsters in January 1976 to 4.5 lobsters in July 1976. (...more...)

James River Finfish Biomass Study, Frank Wojick

Reports

Kepone studies at VIMS and elsewhere are addressing the distribution of Kepone in the James River and its concentration in the various trophic levels. This report provides estimates of biomass for finfish in the lower James River, from the mouth to mile 85 (close to Richmond). Companion reports will provide data for shellfish and crustacean biomass in the same area.

Index Of Juvenile Striped Bass, White Perch, And Alosine Fishes In The Rappahannock River Following The March 1980 Oil Spill, William H. Kriete Jr. Jan 1980

Index Of Juvenile Striped Bass, White Perch, And Alosine Fishes In The Rappahannock River Following The March 1980 Oil Spill, William H. Kriete Jr.

Reports

A ruptured pipeline caused a large spill of petroleum products above Fredericksburg, VA on March 6, 1980. Much of the oil was recovered; however, a portion of the contaminant eventually reached the Rappahannock River. The significance of the spill was magnified because it occurred during spawning of anadromous and other commerically important fishes.

A study following the spill was conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) in the summer of 1980 in the upper Rappahannock River. The objectives as stated in the proposal were to (1) determine an index of abundance for juvenile striped bass (Morone saxatilis), alewife …
