Pollination of crops and naturally-occurring flowering plants is a critical ecosystem service provided by managed and unmanaged animal pollinators. Insects are the most studied pollinators, particularly managed honey bees, unmanaged wild bees, and butterflies. Bees and butterflies thrive in early-successional habitat featuring grasses, exposed soil, wildflowers, and shrubs, which is consistently found within transportation and utility rights-of-way (ROW). However, intensive management of ROW can reduce the amount of high-quality pollinator habitat; such practices include frequent mowing, broadcast herbicide use, and planting non-native cool season grasses. A decrease in wetland habitats throughout North America has caused a decline in populations of marsh birds. The objective of this study was to estimate population densities and abundances of secretive marsh birds in Iowa. Call-broadcast surveys were conducted in conjunction with distance sampling for eight species of marsh birds at wetlands in three regions of Iowa during 2009 and 2010. Regions were defined by observed microhabitat characteristics which also corresponded to physiographic regions. This study was designed to measure costs of long-distance shipment of meat by motor carrier. Costs were compared with published rates for meat shipments by truck, rail and trailer-on-flatcar (TOFC). Finally, meat trucking costs were compared with costs of trucking meat-equivalent amounts of livestock. Results of the study provide a partial basis for evaluating the economic merits of expanded livestock production activities in grain-surplus Great Plains locations. Such an expansion might aid in the economic development of the region and ease the chronic problem of rail freight-car supply.
