Emissions Of Volatile Organic Compounds From Lacquer Coatings Used In The Furniture Industry, Modified With Nanoparticles Of Inorganic Metal Compounds, Agata Stachowiak Wencek, Magdalena Zborowska, Wlodzimierz Pradzynski, Boguslawa Waliszewska

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study presents results of studies on emissions of volatile organic compounds from lacquer products containing nanoparticles of inorganic metal compounds (SiO2, TiO2, and Ag). The lacquers selected for analyses were applied on the surface of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) wood. Tests were conducted by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and thermal desorption. Concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released to the air by tested coatings in the first stage of the analyses fell within a very broad range (307-1829 µg/m3). Analyses of VOC emissions were conducted after 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 30, 60, and 90 days. …

Introduction The U.S. furniture industry has changed dramatically in recent years. Furniture manufacturers, for example, have recently faced competition from foreign producers that has been particularly intense – resulting in factory closings and job losses in many areas of the country, including the Mid-South. In Mississippi, for example, the number of employees in furniture and fixtures industries dropped by 2,100 (6.8%) in the year 2000 (Center for Policy Research and Planning 2001). Similar job losses have been occurring in Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina and other important furniture-producing states. Nationwide, employment in furniture and fixtures manufacturing dropped by 40,000 (7.2%) from …

If you own timberland in Mississippi that has a hardwood component, you definitely should be interested in the furniture industry and the outlook for the use of wood in this market. The furniture industry provides a ready market for high quality hardwoods, as well as for lower quality hardwood timber; the outlook for the use of wood of both types is very favorable - particularly in the production of upholstered and non-upholstered furniture for household use.

The U.S. wood household furniture industry has adapted to change in many ways in recent years. The industry has grown steadily since the 1982 recession, and has been shifting to the U.S . South and Southeast. Although California has also become prominent in furniture production, many recent factors indicate geographic shifts away from the state, particularly in wood furniture production. The household furniture industry has also adapted and continues to adapt to factors which have increased the globalization of trade in all products. Foreign competition has resulted in mergers and consolidation in the U.S. household furniture industry, and has also …

Furniture manufacturing is one of the most important industries in Mississippi; the industry's phenomenal growth and current high levels of production and employment have recently been widely recognized and publicized. The Mississippi Economic Council (1988), for example, recently labeled the state "The New Furniture Capital of America;' and Northeast Mississippi was recently described as a "booming region'' that "wants to be the Furniture Capital of America'' (Evans 1987). The present report characterizes important aspects of Mississippi's furniture industry, including its development and relative importance within the state and within the U.S., and assesses current information on the availability and use …
