Alzheimers Disease: The Effects It Has On Everyone Involved, Mckinlee Denson
Alzheimers Disease: The Effects It Has On Everyone Involved, Mckinlee Denson
Fall Student Research Symposium 2022
Alzheimers Disease is hard on everyone who is involved. With being a caregiver in my past I understand how hard it is taking care of someone with Alzheimers Disease. Family plays a big role in the life of those who have Alzheimer's Disease. On average 11 million Americans provide 15.3 billion hours of unpaid work. I believe that we need to find relief for those who give endless hours to support their loved ones with AD. Many people are impacted by Alzheimers Disease this can be friends, family, and medical caregivers. Alzheimers is especially hard on those who have the …

Regulations And Effects Of Foreigners' Deportation Decisions A Comparative Study, Raad Alhammadin
Journal of Police and Legal Sciences
The aim of the study was to identify the procedural and objective legal principles specific to the deportation of foreigners that need to be considered within the legal framework of deportation. The study relied on a descriptive analytical approach, which involved observing, analyzing, and highlighting the elements of the subject. It concluded that the purpose of deporting foreigners is the state's right to expel non-citizens from its territory for reasons related to its internal or external security and in accordance with applicable laws. The regulations are considered safeguards to ensure the proper exercise of administrative authority in issuing deportation decisions …
Effects Of High Fat Diets, Esther Abady
Effects Of High Fat Diets, Esther Abady
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
With obesity on the rise, and subsequently numerous diseases, many people are looking for newer ways to counter the effects of the influx of fatty, high sugar and unhealthy foods they are consuming. The most common and widely used method is a diet plan. The key to both a healthy and effective diet is knowing what the diet does to the body. There are short term diets which have adverse effects if kept for too long and long-term diets which are aimed for a healthy lifestyle. Every diet is based on the increased and decreased consumption of different macronutrients and …
The Effects Of A Yoga Intervention On Cognitive Function In Older Adults, Elizabeth Edwards
The Effects Of A Yoga Intervention On Cognitive Function In Older Adults, Elizabeth Edwards
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Cognitive decline and reduced cognitive function presents a serious risk to the older adult population. As the population of individuals over the age of 65 continues to increase, this presents a need for effective solutions to help people sustain healthy, independent lifestyles. Currently, physical activity is recommended for physical health in older adults and has shown evidence in maintaining cognitive function. In particular, the mind-body practice of yoga is a promising form of physical exercise that shows positive cognitive benefits. While the effects of yoga appear to be promising, the current literature is lacking scientific rigor. This study investigated the …
Adolescent Binge Alcohol Exposure Effects On Heart Structure And Function, Lizhuo Ai
Adolescent Binge Alcohol Exposure Effects On Heart Structure And Function, Lizhuo Ai
Master's Theses
More than 5 million underage Americans report binge drinking at least once per month. While the effects of alcohol consumption on the adult heart have been well studied, the impact to the adolescent heart is almost entirely unknown. Adolescents primarily consume alcohol in a binge pattern, which elevates blood alcohol content (BAC) to 0.08 g/dL within 2 hours. During adolescence the body grows rapidly, and the heart must also grow by cellular hypertrophy to meet this increasing demand. Our goal was to determine the impact of adolescent binge alcohol exposure on the heart, using an outbred rat model. This thesis …
Should Subclinical Hypothyroidism Be Treated?, Rachel Kaufman
Should Subclinical Hypothyroidism Be Treated?, Rachel Kaufman
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Subclinical Hypothyroidism, SCH, has been detected with increasing frequency in recent years and has brought about major controversies regarding management and treatment [Meier et al., 2001]. The condition is characterized as having a high concentration of thyroid stimulating hormone, yet normal thyroid hormone levels and is often asymptomatic. Scientific articles retrieved from various databases helped determine some of the long term risk factors associated with SCH, including progression to overt hypothyroidism, fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, neuropsychiatric complications and reproductive malfunctions. Studies determining the clinical and metabolic effects of L-thyroxine hormone replacement therapy on symptoms and potential risks of SCH …
The Effects Of Modifiable Lifestyle Behaviors On Lipoprotein Particle Concentration And Size, Ryan R. Porter
The Effects Of Modifiable Lifestyle Behaviors On Lipoprotein Particle Concentration And Size, Ryan R. Porter
Theses and Dissertations
Lipoprotein concentrations are well established biological markers associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Recent research has placed great importance on the various functions of the different lipoprotein subfractions (small and large low-density lipoprotein particles [LDL-P]; small, medium and large high-density lipoprotein particles [HDL-P]). Modifiable lifestyle behaviors such as exercise, diet, and sleep have been shown to have direct effects on CVD risk, in part by altering blood lipid and lipoprotein profiles. The overall goal of this dissertation was to determine if specific modifiable lifestyle behaviors were associated with the concentration and size of lipoprotein subfractions.
Two studies, both utilizing a …

Articles
The presence of chlorate in milk and dairy products can arise from the use of chlorinated water and chlorinated detergents for cleaning and sanitation of process equipment at both farm and food processor level. Chlorate and other oxychlorine species have been associated with inhibition of iodine uptake in humans and the formation of methemoglobin, with infants and young children being a high‐risk demographic. This comprehensive review of chlorate and chlorine derivatives in dairy, highlights areas of concern relative to the origin and/or introduction of chlorate within the dairy supply chain. This review also discusses the associated health concerns, regulations, and …
What Are The Mechanisms And Effects Of Age-Related Shortening Of The Spine?, Joseph Weingarten
What Are The Mechanisms And Effects Of Age-Related Shortening Of The Spine?, Joseph Weingarten
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Osteoporosis and Degenerative Disc Disease can cause a loss of height in the spine. This paper focuses on the mechanisms that cause age-related loss of height and its effects. Possible relationships between receptor activator nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) and estrogen with osteoporosis are discussed, as well as possible genetic causes. Exercise may prevent osteoporosis. Osteoporosis may cause a loss of height, vertebral fracture, a decrease in maximum lung capacity, and hip fracture. Degenerative disc disease may cause shortening of the spine. Disc height loss can result in a reduction in the range of motion and stiffness at the affected …
Direct Effects Of Warming Increase Woody Plant Abundance In A Subarctic Wetland, Lindsay G. Carlson
Direct Effects Of Warming Increase Woody Plant Abundance In A Subarctic Wetland, Lindsay G. Carlson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Climate change is expected to continue to cause large increases in temperature in Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems which has already resulted in changes to plant communities; for example, increased shrub biomass and range. It is important to understand how warmer temperatures could affect the plant community in a wetland system because this region provides crucial high-quality forage for migratory herbivores during the breeding season. One mechanism by which warming could cause change is directly, where warming influences the vital rates of a species; these effects may be either positive or negative. Warmer temperatures may also affect a species indirectly, by …
Direct And Indirect Effects Of Climate Change On Plant Populations And Communities In Sagebrush Steppe, Andrew R. Kleinhesselink
Direct And Indirect Effects Of Climate Change On Plant Populations And Communities In Sagebrush Steppe, Andrew R. Kleinhesselink
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Rapid climate change presents humanity with a number of big problems. Foremost among these is the sad fact that the climate we will pass on to our children will likely be nothing like the climate that we inherited from our parents. Ecologists have collected solid evidence that climate change has already begun to affect the living things around us and the ecosystems humans depend on. Unfortunately, predicting the future effects of climate change on life on earth is not easy. We focused on three research goals as part of an effort to improve our ability to predict how plants and …
Effects Of Feeding High-Moisture Corn Grain With Slow-Release Urea In Dairy Diets On Lactational Performance, Energy And Nitrogen Utilization, And Ruminal Fermentation Profiles By Lactating Cows, Braden M. Tye
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The objective of this experiment was to determine if nutrient utilization and energy partitioning by lactating dairy cows would differ in response to dietary corn grain (CG) types [steam-flaked corn (SFC) vs. high-moisture corn (HMC)] and to test if the types of CG would interact with slow-release urea (SRU) on lactational performance and energy utilization. Eight multiparous Holstein cows (32 ± 8.2 days-in-milk) were used in a duplicated 4 × 4 Latin square with one square consisting of ruminally cannulated cows. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement was used to test 4 dietary treatments: SFC without SRU, SFC with SRU, …

Effects Of Plant Stress On Facultative Apomixis In Boechera (Brassicaceae), Mayelyn Mateo De Arias
Effects Of Plant Stress On Facultative Apomixis In Boechera (Brassicaceae), Mayelyn Mateo De Arias
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In flowering plants, apomixis is asexual reproduction by seeds. Apomixis allows the production of offspring with the same genetic characteristics as the mother plant. Fertilization is not required. Apomixis could become a tool for naturally cloning high-yielding crop hybrids through their own seed. However, apomixis does not occur in major crop plants, except for citrus. In the present study, genes that might cause apomixis in naturally occurring apomictic plants were investigated. Sexual and apomictic species of the genus Boechera were exposed to stressed and non-stressed conditions. Effects of these treatments on the expression of apomixis was then measured. Stress triggered …

Honors Projects
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) had widespread use in the United States in commercial manufacturing in the United States until the late 1970s. Even though they were banned, measurable amounts can still be found in the environment and food sources. PCB has known effects on altering hormone development and behavior in the species Rattus norvegicus. To determine the most crucial developmental time of exposure to PCB in Sprague-Dawley rat pups, rat pups were exposed to PCB at differing weeks of either gestation period or the first postnatal week. Behavioral tests were performed for the different rat pups, as well as blood …

The Australian Government increased the tax on ready-to-drink (RTD) alcohol beverages in 2008, in order to address concerns about increasing alcohol consumption among young people. This decision resulted in significant debate and discussion in the media, and in academic circles. The aim of the current study was to examine media coverage of the debate – and particularly the arguments posed in favour of and against the tax – now that we have objective evidence of its impact. We find that business owners and industry groups were vocal in the media, raising a number of arguments in opposition to the tax; …

Alzheimer's disease is characterised by the inappropriate death of brain cells and accumulation of the A beta peptide in the brain. Thus, it is possible that there are fundamental differences between Alzheimer's disease patients and healthy individuals in their abilities to clear A beta from brain fluid and to protect neurons from A beta toxicity. In the present study, we examined (1) the cytotoxicity of Alzheimer's disease cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) compared to control CSF, (2) the ability of Alzheimer's disease and control CSF to protect cells from A beta toxicity and to promote cell-mediated clearance of A beta and lastly …

A remarkable 300% efficiency enhancement driven by a matching increase in the short circuit current was observed in a mixed porphyrin dye-sensitized solar cell constructed from two dyes in a 3:1 ratio. Absorbed photon-to-current conversion efficiency measurements indicate an improved charge injection yield for both dyes in the mixture. Several possible origins for the observed performance enhancement are discussed.

Structural Contributions Of Antipsychotic Drugs To Their Therapeutic Profiles And Metabolic Side Effects, Somayeh Jafari, Francesca Fernandez-Enright, Xu-Feng Huang
Xu-Feng Huang
Antipsychotic drugs have various neuropharmacological properties as a result of their structural diversity. Despite their therapeutic benefits, most of the prescribed atypical antipsychotics can induce severe side effects, including weight gain, type II diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular diseases. Among the developed atypical antipsychotic agents, tetracyclic dibenzodiazepine and thienobenzodiazepine compounds, particularly clozapine and olanzapine, are associated with the greatest weight gain and metabolic disturbances. However, the unique chemical structure of these compounds causes the low risk of side effects reported for typical antipsychotics (e.g. extrapyramidal symptoms and tardive dyskinesia). This report reviews the recent discovery of the potential role of the …
