Microprobe Analysis Of Element Distribution In Rabbit And Dog Erythrocytes As Examples Of "High" And "Low" Potassium Cells, H. R. Catchpole, M. B. Engel May 1996

Microprobe Analysis Of Element Distribution In Rabbit And Dog Erythrocytes As Examples Of "High" And "Low" Potassium Cells, H. R. Catchpole, M. B. Engel

Scanning Microscopy

The concentrations of Na, Mg, P, S, Cl, K and Fe were determined by microprobe in near 100% hematocrit suspensions of rabbit and dog erythrocytes prepared by freezing and drying. These cells are representative, respectively, of "high" potassium, "low" sodium, and "high" sodium, "low" potassium cells. Water contents of the cells were the same, as were, approximately, the levels of Cl, S and Fe. Rabbit P was nearly double that of the dog. For the rabbit, the cell Na/K ratio was 0.21 and for the dog 15.4, illustrating the major diffusible electrolyte difference between these two types of cell. The …

Species Of Lachesilla In The Caribbean Islands And Trinidad (Insects: Psocoptera: Lachesillidae), Alfonso Neri, Garcia Aldrete Mar 1996

Species Of Lachesilla In The Caribbean Islands And Trinidad (Insects: Psocoptera: Lachesillidae), Alfonso Neri, Garcia Aldrete

Insecta Mundi

Twenty two species of Lachesilla were found in the West Indies and Trinidad, 11 of which are here described. Twelve species inhabit the Greater Antilles (with two exclusive endemics), four species are found in the Lesser Antilles (with two exclusive endemics), and 11 species are found in Trinidad, four of which are exclusive endemics. Two species are shared between the Greater and the Lesser Antilles. Nine of the 12 species of the Greater Antilles also occur in Mexico and the US., eight species also occur in Central America and three species are also found in South America. One of the …

Current Status Of The Plains Pocket Mouse, Perognathus Flavescens, In Iowa, Gregory M. Wilson, John B. Bowles, Justin W. Van Zee

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Published and unpublished accounts of the plains pocket mouse (Perognathus flavescens) were utilized to document the existence of extant populations and to summarize and report additional data about the biology of this state endangered Iowa species. Populations of P. flavescens exist in western (Harrison, Monona, and Plymouth counties) and extreme eastern (adjacent portions of Louisa and Muscatine counties) Iowa, the latter of which represents the eastern-most record for the species in North America. In addition, we document a new locality for P. flavescens from the interior of the state (Benton County). All known populations of P. flavescens in Iowa occur …
