Haematococcus: A Successful Air-Dispersed Colonist In Ephemeral Waters Is Rarely Found In Phytoplankton Communities, Savvas Genitsaris, Natasa Stefanidou, Matina Katsiapi, Elisabeth Vardaka, Konstantinos Ar. Kormas, Ulrich Sommer, Maria Moustaka-Gouni
Turkish Journal of Botany
In a literature search, the presence of Haematococcus in phytoplankton communities and its biogeography were investigated. Haematococcus, although showing a wide biogeographical distribution, has been rarely found in phytoplankton communities. Simultaneously, the colonization potential of air-dispersed Haematococcus in ephemeral waters and its interactions with coexisting phytoplankton taxa were examined by microscopy and molecular methods. Haematococcus was a successful colonist, appearing among the first taxa in the experimental containers. According to principal component analysis, Haematococcus growth rate was negatively correlated with the abundance and species richness of the other autotrophs. Furthermore, a negative correlation between Haematococcus and Chlamydomonas and a positive …

Assessment Of Species Diversity And State Of Stipa Tenacissima Steppes, Wahida Ghiloufi, Jose Luis Quero Perez, Miguel Garcia Gomez, Mohamed Chaieb
Turkish Journal of Botany
North African steppes are subjected to extreme degradation resulting in the reduction of their surface, genetic erosion of resources, and decrease in biodiversity. Stipa tenacissima steppes, which constitute one of the most representative vegetation types in the driest areas of the Mediterranean basin, are continuously degrading. With the aim of contributing to a better knowledge of the floristic composition and diagnosing the state of degradation of these steppes, we conducted a phytoecological analysis of 10 S. tenacissima sites in Tunisia. Floristic inventory compiled a systematic list of 46 vascular plant species belonging to 43 genera and 26 families. Species richness …

Expanding The Understanding Of A Forest Ectomycorrhizal Community By Combining Root Tips And Fruiting Bodies: A Case Study Of Tuber Magnatum Stands, Giorgio Lalli, Marco Leonardi, Marilena Oddis, Giovanni Pacioni, Elena Salerni, Mirco Iotti, Alessandra Zambonelli
Turkish Journal of Botany
A survey of both ectomycorrhizal (ECM) root tips and fruiting bodies of ECM fungi was carried out during a four-year period (2009-2012) in two similar forest stands in central Italy, previously investigated in detail being habitats of the Italian white truffle Tuber magnatum Pico. This research is one of the few conducted in mixed forest stands and, for the first time, it took into account the cryptic fungi (corticiaceous, hypogeous, and sclerotia). This survey led to an exhaustive description of the ECM community by integrating all the 197 taxa recorded (147 species as fruiting bodies, 65 as ectomycorrhizas, and 15 …

The Relationship Between Riparian Zone Width And Floristic Quality In Shenandoah County, Virginia, Jamie D. Smith
The Relationship Between Riparian Zone Width And Floristic Quality In Shenandoah County, Virginia, Jamie D. Smith
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Riparian zones harbor an above average plant biodiversity. This biodiversity is threatened by invasive species and increasing human disturbance, the latter of which includes deforestation from agriculture and urban development. In this study, I examine relationship between the width of a forested riparian zone and the vegetation growing there. By using floristic quality assessment as a measure of anthropogenic disturbance, one can determine if wider riparian zones foster exclusion of non-native species while providing higher quality habitats for native plants. A randomized block design was used with three forested riparian treatments: deforested, moderately forested (woody vegetationstream), and extensively forested (woody …
The Significance Of Micro-Prairie Reconstruction In Urban Environments, Bruno Borsari, Neal Mundahl, Malcom F. Vidrine, Marc Pastorek
The Significance Of Micro-Prairie Reconstruction In Urban Environments, Bruno Borsari, Neal Mundahl, Malcom F. Vidrine, Marc Pastorek
The Prairie Naturalist
An aggressive urban sprawl during the last half century has not only contributed to habitat disturbance and extirpation, as well as a loss of knowledge and appreciation for biodiversity. Across the United States, prairie reconstruction has been a very effective approach for developing sustainable landscape designs in city parks and other open spaces. The purpose of this work is to focus on restoration and reconstruction of selected micro-prairies as a vehicle for enhanced place-based education and to partially remediate the consequences of global climate change and loss of pollinators. From the coastal prairies of southwestern Louisiana, to the eastern edge …

Documenting Effects Of Urbanization On Flora Using Herbarium Records, Rebecca W. Dolan, Marcia E. Moore, Jessica Stephens
Rebecca W. Dolan
As human populations increasingly live in cities, urban floras and the ecosystem services they provide are under increasing threat. Understanding the effects of urbanization on plants can help to predict future changes and identify ways to preserve biological diversity. Relatively few studies document changes through time in the flora of a focal region and those that do primarily address European floras. They often rely on contemporary spatial gradient studies as surrogates for changes with time. We compare historical species records (prior to 1940) with the current flora for Marion County, Indiana, USA, home to Indianapolis, the 13th largest city in …

Bowdoin Scholars' Bookshelf
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve has captured the worldwide attention of biologists, conservationists, and ecologists and has been the setting for extensive investigation over the past 40 years. Roughly 40,000 ecotourists visit the Cloud Forest each year, and it is often considered the archetypal high-altitude rain forest. “Monteverde: Ecology and Conservation of a Tropical Cloud Forest”, edited by Nalini Nadkarni and Nathaniel T. Wheelwright (Oxford University Press, 2000 and Bowdoin’s Scholar’s Bookshelf. Book 1 ), features synthetic chapters and specific accounts written by more than 100 biologist and local residents, presenting in a single volume everything known in 2000 about …

Turkish Journal of Botany
In this work, the valve fine structure, morphology, and dimensions of the epibenthic diatoms living on the marine hydroid Eudendrium racemosum Cavolini were investigated through SEM analysis. Hydroid samples were collected from the Ligurian Sea (Mediterranean Sea), from October 2002 to October 2003, with monthly frequency, allowing definition of the annual cycle of diatom communities. Following several taxonomic/systematic papers, this floristics paper documents 32 new records of diatoms (13 araphid, 17 biraphid, 2 monoraphid), which have been classified into different growth forms (adnate, erect, motile, tube-dwelling). Moreover, new information on morphologic data and biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea are offered, …

Redbuds Similar Around The World, W. John Hayden
Redbuds Similar Around The World, W. John Hayden
Biology Faculty Publications
Like music, one of the hallmarks of biodiversity is theme and variation. Redbuds—species of the genus Cercis— from around the world illustrate this analogy well. Because all redbud species conform to a certain morphological theme, anyone familiar with one particular species of redbud should be able to recognize without hesitation any other redbud species as a member of the genus Cercis. In brief, the redbud theme consists of broad, basally-lobed, leaves with pulvinar petiole thickenings, and pea-like red-purple (rarely white) flowers that may arise on small twigs or main trunks. In fact, these plants are so distinctive, it would …
