Life History Of The Copepod Paramphiascella Sp. Affected By Hydrothermal Vent Effluents, Hans-Uwe Dahms, Li-Chun Tseng, Jiang-Shiou Hwang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Toxicity of Hydrothermal vent (HV) effluents was tested by investigating the effect on growth and reproduction of the copepod Paramphiascella sp. which was collected and subsequently cultured from localities nearby a shallow marine HV at Kueishan Tao Island, Taiwan. Ontogenetic stages (nauplii, copepodids, and adults) were exposed to a range of concentrations of HV effluents in a static renewal culture system. In a first of two experiments we tested the survivorship of these in HV effluent dilutions from 1 to 50%. HV effluents significantly reduced the survivorship of the naupliar stages at concentrations >5% for Paramphiascella sp. (p < 0.01) and all nauplii died at concentrations of 25% and 50%. Copepodids were significantly letally affected at concentrations >5% (p < 0.01) and all died at 50% (p < 0.01). Developmental duration in Paramphiascella was showing a trend of developmental delay in both phases, in the naupliar and in the copepodid phase. Mortality showed a greater sensitivity to chemical exposure than development time. Among both traits were early developmental stages of Paramphiascella sp. more sensitive to HV effluents than advanced stages. We showed that Paramphiascella sp. was a useful test organism in the monitoring of life cycle as well as acute effects of HV effluents being present for millions of years and providing unique ecosystems. Mortality was a useful toxicological endpoint whereas developmental duration was not.

The sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata (Say) (Hemiptera: Tingidae), is one of the most destructive pests of plane trees (Platanus spp.) worldwide. This pest is a major nuisance in Europe since plane trees are very popular in parks. Thirteen entomopathogenic fungal strains including 4 isolates of Beauveria bassiana, 2 isolates of Beauveria pseudobassiana, 6 isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae, and 1 isolate of Isaria fumosorosea were screened against adults and nymphs of C. ciliata under controlled laboratory conditions in order to test their efficacy and search for an effective and safe biocontrol agent strategy. Each isolate was applied with a conidial …

The female sex pheromone has potential a s a control tool for the Brown Treesnake, Boiga irregularis Merrem, a pest introduced into Guam. We conducted male-guided bioassays to determine whether potency of the female pheromone varied according to reproductive state and during vitellogenesis. In weekly simultaneous choice tests, we presented males with skin lipid samples from vitellogenic females, non-vitellogenic females, conspecific males, and carrier controls. The total time each sample was tongue-flicked was recorded: mean total tongue-flick time was highest for samples from vitellogenic females followed by samples from non-vitellogenic females. Pair-wise comparisons of male tongue-flick time for samples of …

Relative Tolerance Of Some Tropical Freshwater Microcrustaceans To Acidification, Priyanka Mallick Halder, Pathik Kumar Jana, Susanta Kumar Chakraborty, Samir Banerjee Jan 2013

Relative Tolerance Of Some Tropical Freshwater Microcrustaceans To Acidification, Priyanka Mallick Halder, Pathik Kumar Jana, Susanta Kumar Chakraborty, Samir Banerjee

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The present work reports on the effects of low pH values on the mortality of 3 freshwater zooplankton available in the freshwater ponds of Midnapore district. Acute bioassay tests on Daphnia lumholtzi, Moina brachiata, and Heliodiaptomus viduus to varying acidic pH levels of water were performed in the laboratory using serial grades of hydrochloric acid solution. Among the 3 genera, M. brachiata was found to respond sharply to acid stress in a 1-h assay, since 100% mortality was achieved at pH 5.79 (2.347 mM HCl), as compared to H. viduus, which showed 100% death in 1 h only below pH …

Carbon dioxide (CO2), 1-octen-3-ol, acetone, ammonium hydroxide, L-lactic-acid, dimethyl trisulphide and isobutyric acid were tested as attractants for two tick species, Amblyomma americanum and Dermacentor variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae), in doseresponse bioassays using Y-tube olfactometers. Only CO2, acetone, 1-octen-3-ol and ammonium hydroxide elicited significant preferences from adult A. americanum, and only CO2 was attractive to adult D. variabilis. Acetone, 1-octen-3-ol and ammonium hydroxide were separately evaluated at three doses against CO2 (from dry ice) at a field site supporting a natural population of A. americanum nymphs and adults. Carbon dioxide consistently attracted the …
